On our way to Pandanon Island, we pass by Sulpa island, a small uninhabitat rock outcropping with a cave that people could swim through and reach the other side. The sea is so shallow in these area that pumpboats operators usually have watchers to help navigate the boat. Snorkling around Sulpa is excellent although you don't get to see a lot of reef fishes. You see more of sea urchins here. Nevertheless its a great place to stop by and bath in these waters for a while.

Our country has one of the most diverse marine habitats in the world and some of these spots contains more marine species per square kilometers than anywhere in the planet. Its pleasing to see significant effort has been made by our local governements in some areas to protect and maintain that critical ecosystem. Tourism provides much of Cordova's income, a fifth class coastal municipality whose people are primarily engaged in fishing. Here fishermen like this guy acts as watchers protecting the waters off hilutungan which has bee declared as a marine sanctuary from illegal activities.

a month after magellan's arrival in cebu, philippines he got himself involved in a feud between two local chieftains, datu lapu lapu of mactan and rajah humabon of cebu. magellan offered his services to settle the dispute for his new friend, humabon (this was also an opportunity for magellan to show off the military prowess of spain. it is to be noted that magellan was a military veteran). turning down the offer of humabon to augment the spanish soldiers with his men, magellan attacked the village of lapu lapu with a force of about 60 men. it turned out that lapu lapu was prepared for his attack and retaliated with over a thousand warriors. during the ensuing battle magellan was killed in what is now called "battle of mactan". the date April 27, 1521. the photos today is a monument to magellan and a statue of lapu lapu
