To celebrate "Power Up at Your Library Day" (September 15th, 2016), patrons were invited to use the equipment, supplies and tools in the Innovation Lab to build a giant Rube Goldberg machine. The device was triggered using a Raspberry Pi monitoring Twitter, but most everything else was envisioned, designed and built by patrons on the fly. A video of the contraption in action is available on HCPL's YouTube channel.

I'm going to try something different...
Last weekend I went to the Dream Machines Car, Airplane, and all things mechanical show in Half Moon Bay, CA.
I had a bit of an idea of what I wanted to photograph, but it wasn't until I saw the masses of people with cameras and tripods, even a couple medium format digital rigs that I really decided to go for it.
So in an effort to be a little different, I'm going to be posting a series of black and white (almost abstract) images of the car show. These are from various vehicles that stood out and inspired me...
As far as processing goes, this was rather straight forward... cropping, conversion to B&W, and then a vignette to help highlight the focal points.

What's a car show without a '57 Chevy?
Over the past several months, construction to make way for a new second MRI machine and radiology space has been underway. Last week, BID-Needham officially opened the rooms and activated the new MRI machine, a Siemens Aera 1.5T system.
This state-of-the-art, wide-bore scanner allows for faster scan times and excellent imaging capability. The system has a larger opening and a shorter system design for a more pleasant and comfortable patient experience. For claustrophobic patients, this MRI system provides them with more room so they feel less “closed-in.” In some cases, patients can keep their head outside of the system to look at a lighted ceiling mural, which studies have shown helps to relax patients.
Adding this second MRI system will give our team greater flexibility and availability for patient scheduling. The Department of Radiology at BID–Needham is part of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Department of Radiology and staffed by Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians. Subspecialty interpretations are provided using the same protocols as BIDMC in breast imaging, neuroradiology, musculoskeletal imaging, and body imaging.

Lichterfelde, Germany: This bridge was used to transprt leavings from left to right. It is 502m long, 240m broad and 80m high. It is now a museum and you can walk it from one end to the other. It was able to transport 29000 cubic metre earth per hour.

while the rest of the vending machines stocked a variety of crunchies & munchies, this one with 3kg bags of charcoal caught my eyes!

The Tinkering Studio organized a "love-themed" collective chain reaction at the Exploratorium's After Dark: Heartworks event. Visitors built chain reaction contraptions on section of a heart-shaped pathway, each triggering the next one. After two and a half hours of build time, the whole contraption was set off to activate a grandiose finale that brought together star-crossed lovers: a rat and his beloved rubber duckie.

Washing machines gave a weird "utility room" feel to our only bathroom on the main floor. Goal was to hide them out of the way in the storage room beneath the stairs.
