This is Coral or Club Fungi, which I found growing on a decaying log at Broughtons Wildlife Education Center near Marietta Ohio in Aug 2012. I was amazed at how much it resembles ocean coral. Before I spotted it on this day I don’t recall ever having seen it before. I did a bit of research on it before posting these photos and here are a few interesting facts about it.

It is often found growing on the forest floor or on dead decaying logs it can occur in many colors like orange red and even purple but is most often found like these ones in off white. There are over 30 species of club and Coral fungi many of which look identical but are completely unrelated. The article I read said the Coral fungi’s are edible but emphasized great care should be taken in proper identification before eating what you think is edible Coral Fungi. It also stated that eating them has a laxative effect on some people, another good fact to know, LOL. The little finger like projections at the end of the arms are called Basidia and contain the spores which erupt and fall or float away to propagate more coral fungi.
