Journey with Flam Railway from Flam station to the mountain station at Myrdal. The valleys were home to the Huldra ,a forest siren (Nordic Mythology).

As punishment for Prometheus' giving the gift of fire to mankind, Zeus condemned him to be imprisoned atop a mountain, where a giant eagle would rip out his liver daily, for all eternity.

backdrop - "one day you will"

According to ancient Greek mythology, Zeus (Ζεύς, Jupiter) was the Father and leader of the Olympian gods. Known by many epithets related to weather phenomena, such as “Αστράπιος” (Αστραπή = lightning), “Βρόντιος” (Βροντή = Thunder), “Νεφεληγερέτης” (Νέφος = cloud, he who brings on the clouds), “Ερίγδουπος” (Γδούπος = deep sudden sound), “Ικμαίος” (Ικμάδα = dew) to name a few, Zeus overlooked human affairs below from his throne in Mt Olympus (the tallest Mountain of Greece) and when he was displeased by their acts, he unleashed powerful lighting against them.

Severe thunderstorms are quite common on summer days, when massive amounts of warm, moist air rise into the atmosphere. The strong electric fields caused by opposite polarity charged cloud bottoms and the ground many times cause a discharge in the form of lightning, releasing tremendous amount of heat, light and energy (measured in tens of thousands of degrees and Amperes).

That was the case on the night of August 15th, 2020, when a massive thunderstorm was active not far away from Mt Olympus area (situated outside the field of view of the photo and to the left). I was fortunate enough to catch a lot of them with my camera shutter open for several seconds, but this particular one totally overexposed the frame. I was also fortunate to be far away from the storm!

Best wishes to all - thank you for visiting my photos!

Sille is a village near the city of Konya, Türkiye. It is an antique city which was established about 6000 years ago. The name "Sille" comes from Silen (Silene) of Greek mythology, or "Silenos." The village is located on the antique Silk Road.

Mistakenly called 'The Big Buddha of Chiang Rai' this is actually a massive figure of Guanyin, the Chinese Goddess of Mercy. It's hard to tell from this image, but it's a 26 floor elevator ride to the top of the inside of her head. You can view the surrounding countryside from her eyes and various other openings at the top.

Wikipedia: In Chinese mythology, Guanyin is the goddess of mercy and considered to be the physical embodiment of compassion. She is an all-seeing, all-hearing being who is called upon by worshipers in times of uncertainty, despair, and fear. Guanyin is originally based on the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara. Avalokiteśvara's myth spread throughout China during the advent of Buddhism and mixed with local folklore in a process known as syncretism to become the modern day understanding of Guanyin.

Scylla the mythical sea monster in the Straight of Messina. He lived in the caves on the cliff. Greek mythology warned sailors of the perils. On one side of the straight is Scylia the six headed monster. On the other side of the straight is Charybdis the giant whilrlpool. You must choose between the lesser of two evils or caught between a rock and a hard spot can be taken from this. In Greek mythology, Phoebe is one of the original Titans, the daughter of Uranus and Gaia. The word itself means bright and radiant, qualities pretty much the opposite of the eastern phoebe. So what does any of this have to do with how the eastern phoebe got its name? Absolutely nothing.

Instead, the name comes from the call these birds make: FEE-BEE. Unromantic, but descriptively accurate. Sort of like the killdeer, which couldn't harm Bambi even if it wanted to, but does make the sound KILL-DEER. Scientifically, the eastern phoebe is known as Sayornis phoebe, and is a member of Tyrannidae, the tyrant flycatcher family. It's the largest and most diverse bird families in the world, with members found in almost all of the Western Hemisphere.

Eastern phoebes are mostly migratory birds, breeding during the summer in Canada's far north and most of the eastern United States, traveling south into Florida, Mexico and parts of the Caribbean to spend the winter. Generally, they are found year-round in the Southeast but north of Florida; in recent decades, however, there have been a few eastern phoebes found nesting ias far south as Everglades National Park. Most, however, arrive here in September and October, and return north in March and April.

I found this one along Joe Overstreet Road in Osceola County, Florida.

Nepenthes (/nɪˈpɛnθiːz/) is a genus of carnivorous plants, also known as tropical pitcher plants, or monkey cups, in the monotypic family Nepenthaceae. The genus comprises about 170 species, and numerous natural and many cultivated hybrids. They are mostly liana-forming plants of the Old World tropics, ranging from South China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines; westward to Madagascar (two species) and the Seychelles (one); southward to Australia (three) and New Caledonia (one); and northward to India (one) and Sri Lanka (one). The greatest diversity occurs on Borneo, Sumatra, and the Philippines, with many endemic species. Many are plants of hot, humid, lowland areas, but the majority are tropical montane plants, receiving warm days but cool to cold, humid nights year round. A few are considered tropical alpine, with cool days and nights near freezing. The name "monkey cups" refers to the fact that monkeys have been observed drinking rainwater from these plants.

The genus name Nepenthes was first published in 1737 in Carl Linnaeus's Hortus Cliffortianus. It references a passage in Homer's Odyssey, in which the potion "Nepenthes pharmakon" is given to Helen by an Egyptian queen. "Nepenthe" literally means "without grief" (ne = not, penthos = grief) and, in Greek mythology, is a drug that quells all sorrows with forgetfulness. Linnaeus explained:

If this is not Helen's Nepenthes, it certainly will be for all botanists. What botanist would not be filled with admiration if, after a long journey, he should find this wonderful plant. In his astonishment past ills would be forgotten when beholding this admirable work of the Creator!

Dryads are tree nymphs in Greek mythology. Dryads are specifically the nymphs of oak trees, though the term has come to be used for all tree nymphs in general. They were normally considered to be very shy creatures, except around the goddess Artemis, who was known to be a friend to most nymphs.

In Greek mythology, Athena was believed to have been born from the forehead of her father Zeus. In some versions of the story, Athena has no mother and is born from Zeus' forehead by parthenogenesis. In others, such as Hesiod's Theogony, Zeus swallows his consort Metis, who was pregnant with Athena; in this version, Athena is first born within Zeus and then escapes from his body through his forehead. In the founding myth of Athens, Athena bested Poseidon in a competition over patronage of the city by creating the first olive tree. She was known as Athena Parthenos "Athena the Virgin," but in one archaic Attic myth, the god Hephaestus tried and failed to rape her, resulting in Gaia giving birth to Erichthonius, an important Athenian founding hero. Athena was the patron goddess of heroic endeavor; she was believed to have aided the heroes Perseus, Heracles, Bellerophon, and Jason. Along with Aphrodite and Hera, Athena was one of the three goddesses whose feud resulted in the beginning of the Trojan War.

Greek mythology :...from Crete with his son Icarus. As Minos would not allow him to leave by ship, Daedalus constructed wings for himself and Icarus. He attached the wings to their bodies with wax. As the pair took off, Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun, but the boy, craving adventure with his newly acquired power of flight, flew so close to the sun that the wax melted. Naturally, Icarus's wings fell off and the boy landed in the sea, where he drowned. Daedalus made his way to Sicily, where the king, Cocalus, protected him and, with his daughters,...

One of the best photo opportunities of the Flam Ralway is a stop at the Kjosfossen waterfall.

Here, as passengers disembark on the viewing platform for a short break, a mysterious woman with long hair and a red dress emerges from the forest, dancing to a Norwegian folk song.

She is the Huldra, an elusive forest spirit from Norse mythology. According to local folklore, she lures men into the woods to seduce them.

I so wish I'd followed - my problems would be lessened

Narcissus was a hero in Greek mythology

Narcissus possibly derived from ??? (narke) meaning "sleep, numbness," in Greek mythology was a hunter from the territory of Thespiae in Boeotia who was renowned for his beauty.

He was exceptionally proud, in that he disdained those who loved him.

Nemesis saw this and attracted Narcissus to a pool where he saw his own reflection in the waters and fell in love with it, not realising it was merely an image.

Unable to leave the beauty of his reflection, Narcissus died ...

These here, with salmon trumpets, are a fragrant variety.

I (maybe wrongly) make a distinction (wrongly), based on that fact, between Daffodils and Narcissus...

Have a wonderful day, filled with love, M, (*_*)

The Pohutukawa (Metrosideros excisa) is an iconic coastal evergreen tree endemic to New Zealand that flowers in summer with a brilliant display of red or occasionally yellow flowers. The Pohutukawa has become an established part of the New Zealand Christmas tradition and often features on Christmas cards, in poems and songs. The tree also has a deep spiritual meaning for the Māori people in traditions and mythology.

It is easy to see how the aurora and fertile imaginations could give rise to stories in Nordic mythology such as that of Jormungandr, a serpent so large, it surrounded the earth and grasped its own tail with its mouth. The aurora in this photo has not been altered, it is exactly how it appeared. Also, it may be of interest, at the centre of the photo, when enlarged, you will see Newton Rings. These diffraction patterns seem to have been caused by the two discs of the polarising filter touching each other in the centre. It was an old filter :-)

"Crete hosts an extremely rare and endemic variety of plane trees (Platanus orientalis var. Cretica) with about 50 trees being reported throughout the island. The characteristic feature of this variety is that it is evergreen, unlike the common deciduous plane trees.

One of these trees is of great historical and mythological value and has survived the centuries, since the Minoan era. This is the plane of Gortyna, which still stands proudly in the back side of the current archaeological site of ancient Gortys.

The plane was dedicated to Zeus and according to mythology, under this tree, Zeus mated with Europa after transferring her to Crete from [the Levant]*. This is where she conceived her children; Minos, Sarpedon and Radamanthys. Since then, the plane did not lose its foliage again. The importance given to this tree is very clear by the depiction of Europa under the tree in the ancient coins of Gortys."

"The myth holds us, therefore, not through its romantic flavor, not the remembrance of beauty of some bygone age, not through the possibilities of fantasy, but because it expresses to us something real and existing in ourselves, as it was to those who first stumbled upon the symbols to give them life."

*Ikaria, the island where people forget to Die.What’s their secret? I had read so many articles about that, but I wanted to find out myself. There must be something behind “The Blue Zone” ...

*Ikaria has been inhabited since at least 7000 BC by the Neolithic pre-Hellenic race of Pelasgians.

*According to mythology Icarus, ignoring his father’s Daedalus advice, after escaping their imprisonment in Crete, flew very high, resulting in melting his wax feathers, falling and drawing in the sea somewhere around the island. His father buried his body on this island, which was named Ikaria to commemorate the daring youngster*

*Ikarians are open, relaxed, friendly people who greet you with a genuine smile. They seem to laugh in the face of modern life- the greedy rush through time, the loss of identity through globalization and homogenous life styles, consumerism, and materialism.

They have always been self-sufficient people, mainly shepards, farmers, fisherman, shop owners and craftsmen. They farm their own land with most households growing their own supply of organic fruit and vegetables.

Vishnu and Garuda.

The tale of Garuda and Vishnu is a well-known story from Hindu mythology. It involves two important characters: Garuda, a divine bird, and Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. This tale showcases the bond between devotion, duty, and the concept of dharma (righteousness).

Garuda's unwavering dedication to his mother and his determination to fulfill his duty to save her from slavery showcase his virtuous character. During his quest, Garuda encountered Lord Vishnu. Impressed by Garuda's devotion and determination, Vishnu granted him a boon. Garuda was asked to be the mount of Vishnu, carrying him on his back. Vishnu also blessed Garuda with immense strength and immortality.

In Vaishnavism, a major Hindu tradition that worships Vishnu as the supreme divine being, followers believe that Garuda possesses "infinite physical power" and can bear the weight of the entire universe on a single feather. Garuda is said to be able to manipulate fire and to cause heaven, earth, and hell to stop spinning by flapping his massive wings.
