Georgia Power Headquarters (Heery & Heery, 1976-1981). This is a real late-modernist beast, despite some evident intentions to craft the base into something more human-scaled and approachable, and the kind of fun macro-scale "tilt" move in the dark glass tower. Mack Scogin & Merrill Elam were designer coordinator and senior project designer respectively. It's safe to say they went on to better things, but it's fun to try and find advance hints of their later signatures; I sense Elam's hand here in that big tilt move. Compare the volume's implied prismatic dimensions here to those at Woodruff Health Sciences. I dunno!
In the midground: a skateboarder practices flip tricks in the Folk Art Park, a somewhat undercooked set of spaces occupying portions of a concrete cap over something like twenty lanes of I75/I85. Unfortunately, the cap is also home to something like ten lanes of Ralph McGill Boulevard and Courtland Street, plus unnecessary gentle turning lanes so that cars don't have to slow down. What great conditions for a park! Welcome to Atlanta in the 1990s; this was another attempt at adding amenity for the Olympics. The obvious thing to do is shrink all these roads and delete the turning lanes, but I'm not holding my breath.

Northern Lao PDR is home to a host of traditional craftsmanship. Slim skirts with hand-embroidered diamond motifs or woven textiles dyed shades of blue, or handbags of knotted jungle vine. Textile handicraft training was held for 120 villagers (95% of them women) in 6 villages. More training and more links to buyers of rural arts mean more income for women.

Policy Dialogue on ASEAN MSMEs Participation in Circular Economy

Plopped in the middle of the Concourse Parkway development is a little angular, white-painted folly spanning a narrow bit of the decorative water feature. For architecture fans, this is a trip in the Wayback Machine to the mid-1980s, when an architecture yet to be dubbed "Deconstructivist" reigned supreme under the sign of the adjustable drafting triangle. Wild angles and grids slip past each other, to the point where it even crossing this tame little pond feels frankly dangerous and exciting (note "CAUTION: PLEASE USE HANDRAIL" signage). Scogin & Elam here play with a redundancy and overloading of elements, suggesting just how close this abstract and formal geometric approach lies to the representational double-coding and Mannerism of Postmodernism at the same moment. It's fun! I like it! It's amazing to see something like this still intact, to be honest, especially in Atlanta.

for those who can make sense of the precise ways of the struts and the plies, the warps and the wefts, the shuttle and the reeds, weaving remains a one of the most satiating crafts, an integral part of civilised evolution branching out into a silent expression of art…
it almost seems like a visualisation of mathematical integration, singular blocks of movement, all seemingly straight and linear, translating into a curve that one wonders how it could be conjured up by a large stubborn wooden contraption — an early beacon of industrialisation that would in time be subsumed into the folds of larger machinations… handloom factories of Kumaun… Haldwani, Uttarakhand, India
