THE SORT OF SHOP FRONT ONCE COMMON IN THE CITY OF LONDON
Artillery Lane, a turning off Bishopsgate, has a portion of its north side in the City and the rest of its length within the Borough of Stepney. At No. 56 is one of the old-fashioned London shop fronts. Behind its small panes are the wares of a grocer, but once the place belonged to a silk mercer for here we are in the purlieus of Spitalfields, which became famous for the silk industry owing to the establishment there of a colony of French Huguenot weavers, refugees from the results of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, 1685. The shop front dates from about 1720. In days gone by, wehn successful city tradesmen lived over their shops their prosperity was mirrored in the design, not merely the contents of their shop windows.
