Ctenucha virginica is a moth of the family Erebidae. The wingspan ranges from 40–50 millimetres. The wing color varies from black to olive-brown. The body is a metallic blue-green. The head is yellow-orange, with feathery antennae. The caterpillar has multiple tufts of white and yellow hair. It undergoes metamorphosis in May–August.

Seen on an exterior house wall.

Amata species. I see and photograph a lot of these and decided to go for a lateral view for a change.

Commonly known as wasp moths or handmaidens, there are just over 50 recognised and named Australian members of this subfamily Ctenuchinae.

Many species have these abdominal bands alternating in orange and black appearing to mimic stinging wasp species, hence the common name of wasp moth. Or the colours may denote a hazard as the moths are poisonous if eaten.

Whichever, the colours and markings may give protection from predators such as birds.

I saved her from being run over by cars because she was on the street and looked like a dried up leaf. I picked her up and when I placed her on a bush, she flew right onto my thigh where I manged to get a few shots😀

For National Moth Week, here's a lovely sphinx moth in Montana, photographed at around 5:30 a.m. with the dawn sky behind it. It's Smerinthus sp., I think S. astarte but maybe S. ophthalmica or S. cerisyi. Some sphinx moths drink nectar, but these have reduced mouthparts and adults do not feed. I think it was worth waking up early.

A geometrid moth on a patio wall in Tucson, Arizona. I think that it might be a bent-line carpet moth.

A pair of six-spot burnets (Zygaena filipendulae) is a day-flying moth .

Zygaena filipendulae has a wingspan of 30–40 mm (1.2–1.6 in). The sexes are similar. The fore wings are dark metallic green with six vivid red spots (sometimes the spots are merged causing possible confusion with other species such as the five-spot burnet. Occasionally, the spots are yellow or even black. The hind wings are red with a blackish fringe. The larva is plump and hairy with variable markings, usually pale green with rows of black spots.

It is an aposematic moth, being distinguished by its colors as toxic to predators like birds and lizards. If attacked it emits a liquid containing cyanide, which is present in all stages of the life cycle.

This is a photo of a Giant Atlas moth . Native to Southeast Asia, these moths live only two to three weeks and their sole purpose in life is to mate. When they hatch, their mouths are undeveloped and they do not eat - only mate. They are quite large, with wings averaging up to 12 inches in width.

Paysandisia archon.Spain.Paysandisia archon is a moth of the family Castniidae. It is native to Uruguay and central Argentina and has been accidentally introduced to Europe, where it is spreading rapidly. It is considered the only member of the genus Paysandisia.

This is a very large moth with a wingspan of 90–110 mm. The forewings are dark green with brown streaking, the hindwings are bright red with bold black and white markings. The females, generally larger than the males, are easily recognized by the prominent ovipositor. Like other castniids, this species flies by day and has clubbed antennae and is easily mistaken for a butterfly. The adults fly from June to September.

The larva is whitish and maggot-like and feeds in the stems and trunks of palms (see list below for recorded food plants). In its natural range, the damage done by the larvae is unobtrusive and the species is not considered a pest but the species is causing increasing concern in Europe because of the sometimes fatal damage being caused to native and exotic palms. The species pupates in a cocoon incorporating palm fibres within the larval gallery.

This moth was sitting on my window for hours, so I tried a snap through the glass, The 'ears' got my attention, who knows what it is?
