How can I possibly describe this? In Edwin B. Forsythe NWR there is an 8 mile loop. You can drive your vehicle around the loop. If you happen to go on the night of the full moon, you are presented with one of nature's most beautiful gifts.

Tonight, I stepped outside my car and at exactly 5:11:16 p.m., I looked towards my right and watched the moon rise above the ocean, through the Belt of Venus. It was extraordinary. Then, at about 5:13:29 p.m, just two minutes later, I turned slightly left and watched the fiery sun set behind the sea grass.

No words suffice...

Went camping at Joshua Tree over the weekend for the first time. What an awesome place, especially to run around and do some bouldering. I saw this shot first from Steve Sieren and knew that if I ever were at JT this would be one of the things i could not leave without. I was a bit disappointed I could not see the stars but the full moon was gorgeous in its own right. I have a ton of photos of this tree at different times of the day but I like this one a bit more because it was the first time I did light painting. I'm not sure what I'm actually doing and it turns out very different from one shot to the next but things sort of aligned with this one for me. On a side note, this spot is right next to a campground so I was entertained by a group of campers having fun and feeding me a drink or two in between photos :)

This month's full moon started out pink and quickly transitioned to yellow once it cleared a cloud layer. I accidentally caught it in both colors at the same time.

And the first person who says this is photoshopped gets bopped on the head because 1) I suck at Photoshop, and 2) Seriously, I suck at Photoshop.

... over Burning Mountain.

I live on a ridge overlooking the Colorado River valley... on the opposite side of the river is a geological formation, that runs for about 14 miles, which shows up on USGS maps as the "Grand Hogback".

Locals call it "Burning Mountain"... given it's name because of coal seam fires that burn within the mountain and... some say, have been burning for several hundred years!

The North America captured in a small town during some moonless nights (RGB channels) and some moonfull nights (only hydrogen alpha channel then)

I reworked this one, as the last version was a bit to pale (HA was stretched to bright before combining it with the colour image) plus i did a little bit of sharpening in the bright red gas "clouds"

The moon orbits around the earth not in a circle, but in an ellipse. As a result, the distance from the moon to the earth constantly changes, reaching its shortest distance or closest point (perigee) once per orbit or every month or so. The phases of the moon also change as a function of the relative locations of the earth, moon and sun. When the relative locations are such that the earth is approximately between the sun and the moon, we have a full moon. The special occurrence of the night of April 26, 2021 is that these two events (the full moon and lunar perigee) coincided. One addional iten: If one looks in "Original size" one maybe able to see the stars viewable behing the moon on that date.

I took the opportunity to use my Nikkor 200-500 f/5.6 with a Nikkor TC-14II 1.4x Tele-Converter. This is almost like it came out of the camera. I just touched up the contrast, compressed and cropped the image and converted it from RAW (NEF) to JPG.

On April 12, 2025, skywatchers can enjoy the Full Pink Moon, which also serves as the Paschal Moon—important for determining the date of Easter. Occurring at 8:22 p.m. EDT, this full Moon rises just before reaching apogee, making it a micromoon, meaning it will appear slightly smaller and dimmer than usual. Despite its name, the Pink Moon won't look pink; the nickname comes from the seasonal bloom of moss phlox flowers. This Moon has deep seasonal and cultural significance, with traditional names like the “Breaking Ice Moon” and “Frog Moon” reflecting nature’s spring awakening. Though the size difference may not be obvious to the naked eye, the Moon illusion near the horizon can still make it seem large and golden. It’s a great time to look up and enjoy both folklore and the celestial view. ChatGPT

I had heard in the news that the planet Mars was appearing particularly close to the full moon tonight. The night was cloudless and with especially low humidity, so I decided to step outside our front door and give it a try. This was the resulting image, the only keeper.

I had heard in the news that tonight’s full moon was called “Pink”, not because of its color, but because it is the first full moon of spring (in the northern hemisphere) and the pink flowers that spring brings.

The night was cloudless but with some humidity and I decided to step outside our front door and give it a try with a dark sky, but the moon colored by the rays of the sun passing through the earth’s atmosphere. This was the resulting image, the only keeper.

I have several images of the full moon against a pitch black backgroung and I thought that an image of the full moon during a lightly overcast night would offer something different. Well, this is my attempt at it. The night certainly cooperated, so here it is.

1 year memorial for Japan Earthquake/Tsunami
