Plumstead Road, Woolwich, South East London.

Macro Mondays theme for this week is (Begins With) The First Letter of My Name. That would be the letter E.

So what you see is an electric arc transferring between some money. Admittedly not a lot of money, but I am not a wealthy person.

Electricity, electric arc, money transfer, and electron transfer were some of the titles I considered for my photo this week.

I borrowed some from last weeks entry in the setup and execution for this week.

If anyone is interested in the setup details, just let me know in the comments, and I will post the details after the entries for this week are closed.

Now I’m not a banker, but I’m pretty sure that this is not the same thing as an electronic money transfer.

The Setup

To capture the above photo, I attached two pennies, via wire and alligator clips, to the output of a neon sign transformer. The clips were then supported on two nonconductive plastic bins and arranged as you see in the photo.

To ensure safety, I had to make sure that there were no short circuits, and use safe high energy electrical handling techniques. The voltages I was dealing with are in the 12,000 volt range, more than enough to injure or kill.

To get the multiple "strokes" of electricity, it was a simple matter of cycling the transformer off and on very quickly while the shutter was open. Testing showed that if the arc was left on continuously during the exposure, the plasma cloud created outshone the individual tendrils of the arc, causing the exposure to be very bright and detail to be lost. Since it was these fine details I was after, the on/off technique was what I used.

Lastly, I do not recommend trying this at home unless you really know what you are doing. This type of electrical device can injure or kill if improperly used. These voltages can also damage electronic equipment, such as cameras and phones, with only a very short interaction with these devices. Be safe.

Migrationsaffine Dienstleistungen: "Ria Money Transfer, Lycamobile"

It is claimed that there are currently about 20,000 Brazilians living in Dublin. Most of them appear to be based near where I live mainly because there is a large number of language schools in the area. The good thing about this influx is that there are many Brazilian shops and restaurants for me to visit.

According to Google Maps Real Transfer is the business at this address. I examined my previous photographs of this shop and it would appear that it operated as Real Brasil Food & Grocery And Money Transfer Services a year ago but more recently they have rebranded ever so slightly as Real Brazil Foods [notice the Z rather than S] plus Real Transfer.

Real Brasil Foods are exclusive importers specialising in leading brands of Brazilian style foods, beverages and equipment sourced directly from the manufacturers.

They are one of the main importers for brands such as Yoki, Guarana Antarctica, Vale, Cisne, Hikari, Maguary, Predilecta, Cepera and many more top brands.

They currently operate retails shops in Gort , Co. Galway and at No. 6 Capel Street in Dublin. The are also wholesale suppliers to retail shops and butchers throughout Ireland and the UK.

27 August 2013. Two short metal posts protruded from the pavement in White Hart Lane, near the junction with High Road, Tottenham N17.

Almost certainly they once held a street nameplate. (Perhaps it was taken as a souvenir?)

Walking past regularly I should have spotted these posts long before now. From one angle, Google StreetView showed them without a nameplate in July 2008.

I reported them using the free website FixMyStreet. As there are streetname signs on the buildings on either side of the road, these posts could have been removed. They were a trip hazard; and just more unneeded clutter.

For many years Haringey Council's Environment Department has had a "remove street clutter" policy.

§ Google Street View of where I took this photo.

______________________________

Oh isn't it grand to have policies ?

Haringey Council has many positive, forward-thinking, sustainable policies all at very reasonable cost. Although people are often puzzled about the existence of policies which don't seem to lead to changes in practice. But this is a wholly mistaken view. So if the purpose of Haringey's policies is not to make real improvement, then what are they for?

Well, many policies are posted on Haringey Council's website so residents can read and enjoy them at their leisure. Like a Motto or Mission Statement, they are part of the feelgood, corporate image-building. The Public Relations smile.

But the main reason for publicising policies is to create PR opportunities for the Haringey Council leadership. So the PR staff will issue a Press Release, inventing some suitably upbeat but uncontroversial "quotation" for an important councillor. This can be linked to a staged photo-op where the Council Leader or "cabinet" councillor meets someone; shakes hands; or grins at the camera. Or perhaps they pretend to do something useful - like filling a pothole in the road.

For very important policies Haringey may arrange a public launch. There may even be a conference with invited speakers.

Do Nothing; Rest Afterwards

Then there are the Extremely Important Policies on big topics. Haringey's PR team needs to work even harder to obscure the fact that Haringey's leadership has no fresh ideas about how to tackle problems. One way of hiding this is to set up a "Commission" or "Panel". These are small groups of unelected "experts" selected and appointed by the Council Leader. After many months of wise, careful deliberation highly convenient delay, they'll produce some vague recommendations. Probably stuff the Council is already doing; or at least pretending to.

As their report is - for any practical purpose - the end product of such a Commission or Panel, its publication always gets the full PR treatment with lots of warm mutual congratulation. These documents are printed on glossy paper; usually with more shots of people smiling, shaking hands etc. And padded out with photos of local places - Ally Pally, Bruce Castle Museum, Hale Village, Crouch End clocktower etc. All taken in sunshine with blue skies.

Policy Officers Explained

I've described the public face of Policies. But as with any vital task, the most important people are usually behind the scenes. Because policies don't just happen. They require hours of work, drafting, redrafting, head-scratching, and very many anxious lunches by dedicated staff known as Policy Officers.

The job was invented to develop and write policies; to keep them up-to-date; and store them until the next Policy Review. So an important task for Haringey Policy Officers is to keep a pristine, updated and mostly unread set of policies in plastic folders safely locked in a filing cabinet. Bringing them out for an occasional dusting.

The presence of a Moneygram or Western Union (or other such money transfer organisations) could be indicative of areas were there's a significant resident migrant population, due to the transfer of money through migrant remittances. The MoneyGram billboard here (with connotations of globalisation and international economy) looks humourous (postmodern even) against the twee replica streetlamps of Low Fell's Durham Road.

Some clear evidence that this African foodstore in Benwell has diversified to reflect incoming migrant populations in the area with this handwritten sign in Polish reading 'Polish products on sale'. Interesting also that the shop sign brings the flag of Nigeria to Benwell highstreet.
