Oxfam is running public health campaigns to help prevent disease, including training sessions like this one. Florence Uwineza (in pink top) is Oxfam's public health team leader and been part of the emergency response since the start:
“Our team was at Kigeme camp when the first people began to be transferred from the transit centre at Nkamira. We greeted them at the entrance and handed out key messages about latrine use and safe hygiene so that they knew about the importance of keeping toilets clean and washing hands right from their arrival. In DRC practices are a bit different, so we knew it would be important to educate people about the use of latrines and so on.
"We’ve been working together with MIDIMAR (the government) and others to make sure that people had access to all the facilities they needed. Initially there were some cases of open defecation, but now people are all doing their bit to make proper use of the facilities and keep open spaces clean.
“It’s important for us to think about how we can make our activities as sustainable as possible. Our hygiene clubs are popular because we try and make them as fun as possible – we run games for children, and our older participants put on plays and shows that demonstrate key messages. Participants enjoy the clubs and share what they’ve learnt with their neighbours so we can spread our messages as far as possible.”

#BUGESERA #ReceptionCenter (#BugeseraDistrict): Immediately after the first Burundian refugees began arriving in Rwanda in early April 2015, UNHCR and #MIDIMAR established #BugeseraReception center in order to initially receive, register and provide temporary assistance to those fleeing. In addition to being registered as refugees, UNHCR mobilized its #partners to provide essential items, conduct health and malnutrition screening, and to vaccinate children against measles and polio, before they are relocated by UNHCR to Mahama camp.
“This is a good opportunity since now we have a platform to hear from and share the experiences with private sector. As you all know the development aspirations of our country, wants our economy to be private sector-led economy. If we talk about the development driven by private sector, we need the latter to understand the things that can hamper that development in one way or another. The climate change is real and we need to adapt; the National Adaptation Programme was developed and it is time for the private sector to effectively join in”, said Faustin Munyazikwiye, Deputy Director General, Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), in his opening remarks.
“Climate change is real and is causing massive losses and there are no discussions on this. For instance, during this rainy season in Rwanda, more than 200 people have died because of landslides, flooding imposed by climate change. It is a challenge but also an opportunity for the private sector because we need new businesses and new approaches. We can make things better if we all come together”, said Bodo Immink, GIZ Country Director, Rwanda
