Merlin hunting dragonflies in Cap Tourmente National Wildlife Area (Réserve nationale de faune du cap Tourmente)
Fly-by in poor light. A bit noisy, but it's my first Merlin flight capture, so thought I would post it..
A female (I think) perched up beside a tidal loch, whilst out hunting for small birds. Fantastic to see.
She calls her partner and takes off to meet him at the "mating tree".
This crop represents only about 4% of the frame so, as you might imagine, I'm really beginning to like this lens. The shot was made with the 1.4 converter, on a monopod.
The thrill and excitement of seeing and photographing Merlin never changes ....they are shy , elusive and scarce so to even see this stunning bird of prey makes all the hours and miles worth it ..every time I get so excited
Today was a very mixed forecast and at times the weather was awful but I always think that if I am out there when the rain and wind stops for a while then that is when the birds will appear .....today that proved to be correct, but you can see from the image it was still raining a little .
Found this Juv. Merlin hid in the shadow in an early morning. It totally ignored me when it's concentrating on a dragonfly on the other side.
Heavily cropped and very low shutter speed (about 1/80 s handheld). A challenging situation for me. ; )
Saw this Merlin stretching and fanning it's tail, I missed the shot when it took off, it was so fast
Probably the last Merlin I shall see in a good year for them. This one seemed annoyed that I interrupted its meal. Still looks stern in this pic, it seems.
So, what do we see here? The Merlin you see on the left hand side of the picture, his spidey sense has been awakened by I don't know what. The way you can tell, is by the fact that his two little antennae are standing up. His younger sibling to the right is deeply involved in studying up on the Merlin spells ...
One of you mentioned the quest for inner peace. What does that have to do with Merlin spells? Well, probably only everything. It is maybe not so much Merlin spells in particular but with what you choose to occupy your mind. That can range from counting the number of ducks on a lake during a late midsummer afternoon to, yes, reading a book on spells or getting a handle on which particular aperture would work best on a shot you are composing. And that brings me back to my rant on traffic behaviour. I find that being in traffic does absolutely nothing for me and the quest for inner peace. And mostly that is because you are exposed to external stimuli over which you have absolutely no control. You have to be on top of your game and be able to react in an instant. I suspect that that is the reason you won't find those who made this quest for inner peace their primary purpose (take buddhist monks as an example) sitting behind a steering wheel cursing at others. Could you imagine Buddha himself doing that? ...
So, the question arises as to how to control those external stimuli? And that obviously is the wrong question because you can't. But what you can do is control to which particular stimuli you choose to expose yourself or at least limit the exposure to the ones that you don't appreciate ... And then of course there are those of you who would say that you have control over the reaction to those stimuli ... Really? Anyone of you never blown up and completely lost it? Really? In my mind you are holy and have reached a level of transcendence that actually should allow you to employ levitation at will. Or you are a hermit living in the middle of nowhere surrounded by birds that eat from your hands... Still holy, i'd say.
Possibly, this may not be the best image to show in the context of inner peace because once your spidey sense is up, the quest for inner peace is completely interrupted ... But it does show how quickly and easily this quest can be disturbed by just about anything ... On the other hand, maybe this image is not such a bad example because it also shows the opposite; the other Merlin being totally absorbed in his study and completely oblivious to his surroundings ...
There are also those who choose to go an entirely different route in this quest for inner peace. Pills and alcohol spring to mind. I don't judge but my advice would be to not get behind the wheel once you experience ...
And apparently, there is another way to accomplish this. Courtesy of barbara robeson who provided the following Inner Peace

There is a big pine tree outside my kitchen window in Drangsnes, and I got up late the other day, went into the kitchen and looked out the window and was wondering for a good long while why there was something off about the robin sitting there. Unfortunately when I thought to grab a camera he spotted me looking and flew off, so I didn't manage any good pics.

While walking through Willband Creek Park out of the corner of my eye I spotted this Merlin. I was only able to grab a few quick shots but this one is not too bad.
I saw a ferocious, fast, sharp banking chase, in a heavily treed area involving this Merlin and probably several Robins. It was very exciting, precision chasing, weaving through the trees. The Merlin eventually disappeared in the trees, so I do not know the result.
A male Merlin perched high atop a ponderosa pine snag, above British Columbia's Thompson River. With the bloodied feathers of his last meal still visible on his sharp bill, it's evident this small but fierce falcon is a very skillful predator.
Having located a mated pair setting up a territory in the early spring, I returned a few weeks later and waited beneath a throw blind on a small cliff ledge to achieve this close, eye-level perspective.
