You Are Enough by Adam Roa

"You are who you've been looking for.

So stop looking for more

Unless you're looking in a mirror

Because it's about time for you to see clearly

That you're who you've been looking for

And that empty feeling you've got

That hole in your chest

You only got that feeling

Because you think you're not blessed

With everything you need

You see we live in a consumerist society

Which means they need you to buy stuff

And the easiest way to sell it

Is to tell you you're not enough

Buy this car you'll get girls

Buy this bra you'll get guys

And we seeing it so much

That we start believing these lies

But the truth is

The makeup they're selling

To make you feel prettier

Is the same makeup you buy

To stop FEELING shittier

About this lie they keep telling you

That you're not enough

And what about the movies we watch

All the shows on TV

The more I watch

The more I see I need you to complete me

And yes love is the answer

Love is the key

But if you can't love yourself

How could you ever love me

And loving yourself

What does that even mean

Like massages and selfies

And that sort of thing

Because the more I think about it

The more it feels weird

I've always been taught

That self love was something to be feared

I've been taught that arrogance is bad

And vanity it's not good

And even my bracelets are telling me

To act how Jesus would

So what should I do

How should I act

I'm supposed to love myself

But how do I even do that

Well I got a trick

That I picked up from a friend

Who noticed that I was quick to defend, her

When she would say something negative about herself

She'd say I'm so dumb

I'd say you're so brilliant

She'd say I'm so weak

And I'd say you're so resilient

And when she said I feel ugly

And I said you look beautiful

She asked me why I was so dutifully

Filling up her cup constantly

And yet treating my own cups

So irresponsibly

Because when I looked in the mirror

My voice was quite clear

You're ugly, you're too thin

Your hairline receding

You got a pimple on your chin

And that was when she gave me

A piece of advice

That changed my life

She gave me a hug

And she said

Treat yourself like someone you loved

Treat yourself like someone you loved

Now I had been standing

But I need to be sitting

Because I couldn't believe

That I had been letting

Myself

Keep forgetting that I was who I had been looking for

And deep in my core I knew

It was time to stop looking for more

Until I could look all through my fear

And look into a mirror and see clearly

That the man looking back at me

Was the only one who could make me happy

And I'm already enough

And I'm not any more special or unique than you

That's why I'm here to speak to you

You are already enough

And when you start to see that

You start to be that

Your world will get brighter

You load will get lighter

And you can see that with life you can be a lover

And not a fighter

And that life you deserve it

Because you're worth it

And there is no point in letting yourself

Keep forgetting

Because no matter what you say or do

You are perfect

And so today I hope

I leave you with a direction

Correction away from the flaws

You see in your reflection

They're not flaws to me

They're simply protection

Against all the doubts you have

Of your perfection

So start today

Take a good long look into the mirror

And say 'I AM who I've been looking for!'"

"Distinguished Gentleman's Bike Ride" York!

He's about to go what we in Africa call "bundu-bashing"; i.e. "into the bush" on his bike. Except that in this case the bush is a reasonably well-manicured lawn.... but there you have it.

This is a photo that was a part of a project in honor of Mental Health week. It is meant to show what some people with a mental health condition go through and most importantly, erase the stigma they bare.

Since the text turned out long, I put the full version in the comments. I know not everyone enjoys reading that much, so thank you to those who take the time.

Not my usual genre, but it's good to step outside now and again. This is a self-portrait made in the old School way, as a Hand made composite. ie; The camera on a tripod with a timer, the shot printed and a pair of scissors and a scanner. The only uses of Photoshop were the border and the tag. I love Ps and Lightroom, but it’s good to go back to basics sometimes.

My read at the moment, educating myself with the many forms of Mental illness's that surrounds a lot of people young to old ....It has made me more aware and understanding of the people who do suffer and need help and support from the people close to them,

also an opportunity for me to photograph the book and share with you good people on Flickr

The final photo in the series "The Mind's Journey." This series was about mental health illnesses and the journey that one may experience in dealing with their mental health issue. This is very personal to me and I wanted to show people what it was like to experience these emotions and feelings. This is the story of the spiraling descent of giving into the mental illness, and for me this is my depression.

Sometimes it’s good to stop and think of ONEs actions. Took this shot the other night on an ice cream run. It had just stopped raining which I find is the best time to shoot for awesome reflections. This is on Main Street, Cedar City. Some folks walked by as I was trying to get Woody to cooperate. Luckily I got the ice cream AFTER this shoot.😂👍

"Raise your horns"

Bonus Challenge:

(and yes, I am one of the semicolon tattoo membership!)

from Jules/Jules' Photo Challenge Group:

It is on a somber note that I post this challenge. Today yet another amazing singer -Jill Janus- ended her own life. Her death has sparked a movement led by Lzzy Hale (of Halestorm) called #raiseyourhorns. The challenge is this: if you have ever battled any sort of mental health issues (or know someone who has), snap a picture of yourself with your horns held high & post it on-line- here in the group, on facebook, instagram, tumbler, twitter or all of the above! We need to let people know that they are not alone, that we are all in this together.

Please tag your picture with #raiseyourhorns #endthestigma #mentalhealthawareness

If you would like to read Lzzy's original post you can look it up on her facebook or instagram. While I don't agree 100% with everything she says, her heart is in the right place and it is amazing that she is trying to use her celebrity to bring awareness to this topic that literally touches everyone.

Wish that I could stop and take a breath

But I’m too busy being fucking stressed

Thinking everything good thing will fall apart

How’d I even get this far?

Always waiting on the other shoe to drop

Wether what I’m feeling’s even’s true or not

Paranoia’s got me against the ropes

Crushing my dreams and my hopes

I just wanna feel

Safe

Safe

Wish I that I could give my heart a

Break

The truth is my anxiety’s been whispering to my brain

Don’t you go get comfortable it all could go away

That’s why I never ever feel

Safe

Safe

Another from the archives. One of my favourites from a few years ago when I managed to capture the Big Wheel on an unusually calm River Foyle. You can also see the famed Peace Bridge.

We have had a lot of stigma about our lovely Lough Foyle recently, a lot of young men in particular have taken their lives by jumping from the bridges. Mental health and World suicide prevention days can only raise the awareness for people who haven't been affected by something like this. And as someone who has struggled with my own mental health and even considered this as an option at one time, I can only hope that this will help people push friends and family on asking more and more if things are ok. I would have been a statistic had my sister not pushed me to talk to her and open up to the rest of my family.

Following the death by suicide of singer Jill Janus, Lzzy Hale (of Halestorm) has started a campaign called #raiseyourhorns. The challenge is this: if you have ever battled any sort of mental health issues (or know someone who has), snap a picture of yourself with your horns held high & post it online. We need to let people know that they are not alone, that we are all in this together.

I have certainly had my own issues over the years with anxiety, depression and loneliness, so I'm 100% behind this one.
