This was taken, fairly obviously, in Anfield in October 24. I was with Kylie in the away end as City Women took on Liverpool Women, and I think it was the last time I watched a team fielded by Matt Beard.
News of his sudden death broke last night, and when the sudden death of someone is reported without cause in modern broadcasting protocols, that only means one thing.
I'm a very casual fan of WSL at best, though I have been to a few games. I do know that despite recent growth, professional women's football in the UK is a pretty small pond and Matt Beard had been swimming in it for a very, very long time. He will have touched the lives of so many people in that world that it will be profoundly rocked by his passing.
Perhaps the greatest tragedy is that a man who was so far ahead of the curve in terms of player welfare should be haunted by his own demons. One of the good guys. Rest in peace.
A rare, albeit not unprecedented, event today as I went to a match at Anfield!
Liverpool Women were playing Manchester City Women and as it was a good fixture and Manchester is nearby LFC felt it was worth rolling the dice on playing the fixture at Anfield.
It was a good decision, as it felt like they maybe had 20,000 there.
Kylie is a massive City fan and decided that she'd be going to the game and invited me to tag along.
As a neutral it was a great game, and the final 2-1 win for City was probably a fair result. Entertaining, and that's all you want from a game!
