The Willys MB jeep, also made as the virtually identical Ford GPW, was produced in large numbers by the United States from 1941 to 1945. 361.339 for the Willys Jeep and 277.896 for the Ford GPW.
The Willys (and Ford) jeeps were considered by many Americans, including General, and later President, Eisenhower, General George Marshall, and Pulitzer Prize-winning war journalist Ernie Pyle, as one of the key means by which World War II was won. The small jeep acquired a certain iconic status due to its good construction and performance, wide availability, and positive media coverage.
