The 125,000 square-foot facility serves as a community training center for the Chicago Blackhawks, rival NHL teams and youth and recreational leagues. Opened in Nov. 2017 at 1801 W. Jackson Blvd., the former site of Malcolm X College, the arena features two full-size hockey rinks, training room, six locker rooms and dining and hospitality facilities, NOTE: It was renamed the Fifth Third Arena after MB Financial was acquired.
NOTE 2: The Blackhawks acquired a seven-acre lot just west of the arena from Rush Hospital in 2023 for $23.5 million, of which $6.3 million is going towards the Sankofa Wellness Village. The team has formalized details for the arena expansion, which will take up roughly 4.25-acres of the land for the multistory sporting facility with 135,000 square feet of additional space for the team and its local hockey programs. Two regulation-sized ice rinks will be connected by a new central lobby with an entrance off W. Jackson Boulevard and another from the expanded parking lot on the south. The new rinks will hold 300 seats and 1,500 seats, respectively. Plans for the rest of the site call for multiple high-rises with up to 1,500 residential units or 1,200 residences and 600 hotel rooms beyond 2026. The arena expansion is set to break ground in 2024 with a completion date of 2026.
