The British born bad girl. Spoiled n rotten to the core first stepped onto the scene in pubs n punk rock clubs of London. Where she caught the eye of Buzzer. Soon the two were knocking over those very clubs n pubs so when things got hot they headed back to the Florida Everglades where she became an official member of the Dreadnoks.
This is my take on Kurt's latest Nok chick Mavis.

I was just returning to my bicycle after a downtown meeting when I passed them on the street. She had planted her feet and was facing him directly and I sensed the emotional intensity usually associated with a conflict. As I passed, the body language changed and I could tell there was an understanding between them. On a whim, I stopped and shared my observation and said I hate seeing people in open conflict on the street and was relieved to see that my initial “take” had been misleading. They were intrigued by my observations and seemed friendly and open. Our brief conversation quickly shifted to my inviting them to be photographed for my Human Family photo project and I explained the circumstances of our meeting would make an interesting story. They quickly agreed. Meet Shawn and Mavis.
I photographed the two of them against a barrier blocking off some street construction. I could see that the contrast between their skin tones would be a bit of a photographic challenge but they were otherwise easy to photograph and I think the photos show the friendly connection between them. We chatted for a few minutes and finished off the encounter with my taking an individual photo of each. Mavis suggested doing her individual photo against a nearby boulder and I agreed to her preference for wearing her sunglasses. She said "I love my glasses."
Shawn in 48 and from Winnipeg. Mavis is 45, and from Saskatchewan. Shawn explained that he has travelled all across Canada but settled in Toronto because of its international flavor and the abundance of construction work. The thing he likes most about construction work is that it is outdoors which suits him. Mavis has been in Toronto for just a year and is studying Psychology at the university. She said she has always been interested in people and in human behavior. Noting her age, I commented that she must have had a different life prior to going back to school. She smiled and said “Oh yes. I’ve done other things.” She cited having lived in St. Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean where she worked in customer service for the travel industry.
Shawn’s message to the project was “Stay true to yourself… and to others.” Mavis’ message was “Remember that families come in many forms.” I invited her to expand on her message and she said it was meant to convey that there is a wide range of family structures and that we need to recognize diversity.
When I asked about their relationship, they told me they met just a month ago at the nearby movie theater and “clicked.” Shawn described Mavis as “intellectual and a good conversationalist.” Mavis described Shawn and “charming.” In the few minutes we spent together, I experienced Mavis as energetic and quick to express her feelings. Shawn came across as warm and laid back with a gentle smile. Mavis said she really liked the project I was doing and I said I was glad that my initial impression of their interaction had been wrong. “It’s nice to see people who clearly care about each other.” Mavis said “We did have a difference of opinion but when you respect one other you can quickly get past it.” We parted with a friendly handshake after exchanging contact information.
