Julia set for f(z)=z^2+c/z^3 with preimages of zero (white circles), fixed points (red crosses), and critical points (black squares).

Topography maps of Titan based on the data in Lorenz et al. "A global topographic map of Titan" Icarus 225 (2013) 367–377.

 

The maps are based on small strips of Cassini radar observations that have been interpolated with splines; the real topography is of course more fractal. The elevations are fairly flat, with higher regions at the sub- and anti-saturnian points.

Basins of attraction for the three periodic solutions to Duffing's equation x'' +fx' - Kx + x^3 - Asin(t/p)=0, with parameters f=0.1, K=2, A=0.4, p=0.6. The dark green and yellow basins correspond to the orbits deep in the left or right potential well respectively, with a tangled boundary reminiscent of the lakes of Wada. The yellow-green basin belongs to the orbit that jumps between the two wells. It looks like it doesn't have a fractal boundary.

Lego mosaic of composer and keyboard player Jon Lord (1941-2012). Created using software I have developed, originally prototyped using Matlab. This mosaic uses 11 colours and is realised by 109 x 128 bricks which in standard Lego has dimensions 874 x 1024 mm.

 

Always proud of his home town, a blue plaque now adorns his childhood home in Averil Road, Humberstone, Leicester (see map).

Matlab's version of the Rubik's Cube is insanely tough to master, unlike their excellent scripting language.

Abstract

One of the demanding duties in face recognition is to deal with illumination and expression variations. A lot of analysis is in progress to beat such issues. This paper addresses the preprocessing technique that’s composed of grouping SVD perturbation and DWT. The proposed method additionally performs nicely underneath one image per individual situations. The ensuing picture of this technique is fed in to the straightforward SVD algorithm for face recognition. This paper performs its accuracy check on ORL, Yale, PIE and AR databases and focuses on the illumination issues.

...of getting all this working:

I've got Windows Vista on my laptop connecting by bluetooth to my mobile phone, and using it as a modem via its GPRS connection.

On the top of that, I'm running a VPN tunnel to the Physics department to allow MATLAB to access the license server.

 

All so I could do some work while I waited for the gas man to show up (he never did).
