A distribution plot of the Political Compass results from group members to date (n = 61). The yellow marker denotes the sample mean, while the green marker denotes my personal score.

Where are all the authoritarian communists?

For reference: this distribution is strongly biased because it is drawn from (1) people who are members of Flickr; (2) people who have chosen to take the Political Compass test; and (3) people who have responded to a request to include their results in this Flickr group. As a result, the distribution is (very) unlikely to be representative of the wider public view.

That last caveat made, it does seem to be the case that Flickr members are predominantly in the lower left quadrant (myself included). There are a few in the right quadrants who have been invited but haven't (yet) added their scores to the group, but probably no more than there are of bottom-lefties who haven't added their scores.

Topography maps of Titan based on the data in Lorenz et al. "A global topographic map of Titan" Icarus 225 (2013) 367–377.

The maps are based on small strips of Cassini radar observations that have been interpolated with splines; the real topography is of course more fractal. The elevations are fairly flat, with higher regions at the sub- and anti-saturnian points.

There are many more people 99% certain of things than 90%, a clear sign of human overconfidence. Not to mention how many are falsely 100% certain of something.

So this is the result of me messing around unnecessarily with image convolution in Matlab. I ran a more-or-less standard edge detection matrix through the original image, -- squared it, so that the greys would be on a sharper curve, then imported it to Photoshop and screened the result over the original. The upshot is that you get something that looks almost like a sketch of real life. I particularly like the jeans and Natalie's arm on the right in "sketch-ness"

Zoom into the "Mandelbrot set" for the map zn+1=Mi(zn)2, where Mi(z) are three Möbius transforms cyclically applied after each other. The transforms are -1/z, (-0.43-i)/((3-.1i)z - i), (wz-i)/(iz+.3+.1*i) where w is used as the control parameter varying across the images. z starts from zero, and the location after 300 iterations derermines the color (angle determines hue, magnitude value). The colored blobs represent areas where zero is attracted to the same limit cycle.

Julia set for f(z)=z^2+c/z^3 with preimages of zero (white circles), fixed points (red crosses), and critical points (black squares).

Scherk's surface is defined by exp(z)cos(x)-cos(y)=0. If z is treated as a complex number rather than a real and multiplied by exp(it) the solution to Re(exp(z)cos(x)-cos(y))=0 performs this curious dance act. The color denotes the imaginary part.

This set works nicely as a slideshow.

Love, horticulture and Matlab were just a few of the topics illuminated in 11,000 donated books strewn over an 8,000 square foot stretch of E. Liberty St. in Ann Arbor, MI on October 23, 2018.

Devised by Spanish art collective Luzinterruptus and brought to Michigan by the U-M Institute for the Humanities, the glowing installation offered Ann Arborites a central place to gather and share in their appreciation for the written word. As the sky became black, the piece turned interactive, inviting onlookers to take from the collection, adding to their own.
