The Building:

Precast & site-cast concrete, curtain wall.

Interesting circulation, facade materials, and transparency differentiation, one side planar and more opaque, the other eroded into terraces.

The 260,000 square-foot, $49 million Main Library, funded by a 1978 bond issue, opened in April 1984. The eight-story multi-purpose building was hailed as a symbol of the resurgence of business, government, and cultural activity in the downtown Fort Lauderdale area.

Saludos a Cesar y Pablo.

Rooks busy collecting twigs for nesting material yesterday

Materials: oil on canvas. Dimensions: 83.5 x 122 cm. Inscriptions: P. Monsted. 1914. (lower right). Auctioned by Sotheby’s in New York, on January 27, 2023. Source: www.evernote.com/shard/s194/res/13034384-09fa-4dfb-8b4c-b.... I have changed the light, contrast and colors of the original photo.

"...Nests are made from spider webs and a wide array of plant materials. This could partially explain the long assembly time because it must take forever to manipulate a spider web into doing your bidding without it sticking to you in the process. Once the outside is complete, the nest is lined with feathers and animal hair to make it warm and snuggly. The entrance and exit are a hole left at the top where the couple can fly in and out.

According to The Birds of North America Online database, this sturdy nest also makes the perfect incubator for eggs during the day and the lower half is sometimes placed strategically in the sun to enhance this effect allowing both mom and dad to leave the eggs unattended while they hunt for lunch. The nest’s shape can hold anywhere from five to 15 eggs. Fifteen seems like a lot of eggs for a bird that’s about four inches long, yikes!

Dan Cooper, President of Cooper Ecological Monitoring, Inc. and local bird expert who wrote the book Important Bird Areas of California, vouched for the Bushtit’s reproductive capabilities.

“They do have exceptionally large broods, 10 plus young is not uncommon, said Cooper. “This is very different from most birds aside from waterfowl, quail, and a couple other groups. This adaptation probably allows them to thrive despite their tiny size and delicateness. They’re one of the most successful urban species, nesting in a huge variety of environments, within the most developed neighborhoods. In this way, they’re like pigeons, though 99.99% of the residents of Los Angeles have never seen or heard of them.”

Since you have a very good chance of seeing a Bushtit, if you do spot one while you’re with someone make sure you say, “There’s a Bushtit, a member of the Long-tailed Tits family.” Because seriously when are you going to have the chance again to say “tit” that many times in a sentence without offending somebody?"

Saw this bird with a beak full of feathers dart into the undergrowth and then re-appeared here minus nesting material. Could possibly be the female, as the other one (see previous) was perched on a nearby branch Chiffchaffing away!

I watched this GC Grebe diving for nesting material. He/she kept bringing it over to a fallen tree and half heartedly placed it on a branch. As soon as its back was turned it fell off and sank to the bottom again.

I must have been going through a moment of luck with this deep shot of the comet; much of January had been clouded out but on this particular morning the skies were looking good. I was particulary happy that I had included Arp 104 (below and just to the right of the comet), the two galaxies are joined by a bridge of galactic material spanning 22 000 light years!

Natural materials. Timber. And technically phosphorus is always natural. Just can't get it in pure form without some help.

One of my Favs from Lauren's portfolio..

the action of her running and the fabric (10 feet of tulle material) just makes this magical for me...

Lauren loves nature so hopefully we capture her fun smile and the beauty of the tall grass and the midwestern warm glow..

lighting was a single AB1600 at about 1/3 power with a 22 inch Beauty dish

we had father stand in the focus sweet spot and then i locked on focus, then Lauren came running down the grass and gave us shot !
