After the Bolivian splendors, we are now in Chile.
I keep a mixed memory of our crossing of the Chilean border at 4500 m (14764ft) altitude. Our guide had warned us, and everything went well, but it still makes a strange impression to see customs officers as fussy: all the suitcases were opened and searched. This was the first time I've seen this at a border, and that's the usual procedure there.
It did not give us a good impression of Chile where we arrived.
After a night in San Pedro de Atacama, we are visiting nearby the Valley of the Moon, a desolate and spectacular place in the Atacama Desert.
Here, we admire a curious rock formation that bears the name of Tres Marias (the 3 married).

Les Trois Mariés
Après les splendeurs boliviennes, nous voici au Chili.
Je conserve un souvenir mitigé de notre passage de la frontière chilienne à 4500 m d'altitude. Notre guide nous avait prévenu, et tout s'est bien passé, mais cela fait quand même une drôle d'impression de voir des douaniers aussi pointilleux : toutes les valises ont été ouvertes et fouillées. C'est la première fois que je voyais cela à une frontière, et c'est parait-il la procédure habituelle à cet endroit.
Cela ne nous a pas donné une bonne image du Chili où nous arrivions.
Après une nuit à San Pedro de Atacama, nous visitons à proximité la Vallée de La Lune, un endroit désolé et spectaculaire dans le désert d'Atacama.
Ici, nous admirons une curieuse formation rocheuse qui porte le nom de Tres Marias (les 3 mariés).

Note: On the way down to Monterey Bay Aquarium, we visited here as that's where my good friend's niece got married. As a student of such, you're able to get married at this church, but, it has to be before your graduation.

Esquelbecq Castle
The castle was already mentioned in 1299, when the daughter of Thierry d'Esquelbecq, Beatrix, married Gauthier Ghistelles. Their descendants owned the Esquelbecq castle until 1584, when the French lords were forced to sell their possessions in Flanders by the Spanish rulers.
The castle was besieged several times. In 1586, part of the castle was destroyed by Spanish malcontents. From 1606-1610 the castle was rebuilt.
The purchaser and new lord and earl of Esquelbecq was Valentin de Pardieu, governor of Gravelines, who led campaigns with the armies of Charles V. When he died without heirs in 1595, the castle of Esquelbecq was left to his nephew Philippe Levasseur de Guernonval. His descendants owned the castle for the next 225 years. In 1793, the Esquelbecq castle also suffered the wrath of the Patriots. Everything that reminded them of the Ancien Régime was looted, destroyed or removed. At the beginning of the 19th century, the castle was ruined by battles and 15 days of enemy occupation. The Guernonval family abandoned it and finally sold it in 1821 to Louis Colombier, a merchant from Lille.
In 1984, the keep collapsed. From 2000 to 2016, restoration work was carried out.
The castle, outbuildings and garden and landscape park are protected and listed on 17-08-1987.

Zowel het kasteel, bijgebouwen alsmede de tuin en het landschapspark zijn beschermd en geklasseerd op 17-08-1987.

Today is the first day I had a complete photoshoot fail. I shot for about 30 minutes in the best light popped my memory card in the computer, heart sank, no images! Sadly I also took some family photos yesterday that didn't get recorded. I tried again but couldn't get my snails to participate and take direction like they did earlier. Boo!
Today is my son's wedding day and it is going to be at my house!! Time to go make final preparations and get ready to celebrate. Have a wonderful day!

Thursday I started a new career as a wedding photographer when my sister and my new brother in law married in the lighthouse of Blavand. my parents were married 61 years. I loved watching them grow more peaceful and loving through the years. My mom died first - two years ago. Dad missed her a lot, but continued to enjoy his life til he died in June of this year. I grieve and I celebrate.
