In a quiet corner, just a few minutes away from the famous 'Teak Bridge' in Mandalay, we ran into a group of young kids with wads of cash in their hands.

They were sitting around in a group of 8, playing cards and raising stakes - some with buckets of notes. Despite being sprawled out across the bleached floor, the kids were competing with the seriousness of the high stakes tables in Macau

We assumed most of the money had come from unwitting tourists handing out notes to these entrepreneurial souls, but who knows.

Shinbyu is the Burmese term for a novitiation ceremony (pabbajja) in the tradition of Theravada Buddhism, referring to the celebrations marking the samanera ordination of a boy under the age of 20.

It is deemed the most important duty that parents owe to their son by letting him go forth and embrace the legacy of the Buddha, join the Sangha and become immersed in the teachings of the Buddha, the Dhamma, at least for a short while, perhaps longer if not for the rest of his life. A boy may become a novice on more than one occasion, but by the age of twenty there will be another great occasion, the upasampada ordination, in which the boy becomes a fully-ordained bazin Those who are not blessed with a male child will seek for an orphan boy or a boy from very poor families in order to receive this special dispensation by the Buddha and hence gain great merit by the act. Shinbyu may well be regarded as a rite of passage or coming of age ceremony as in other religions. Spending some time however short it may be, in a Buddhist Vihara (Monastery) in his youthful days is regarded by most Buddhists as the best religious inheritance to children by the parents and it will have a lasting effect on his life.

As I was leaving Mandalay Hill, I noticed a group of teenagers playing football. Chinlon is the most popular street game in Myanmar, but football gets a fair attention, too. I was fascinated by the rays of the setting sun piercing the dust of the football pitch, and the intensity of the moment.

Mandalay has simply the best people. Unbelievably friendly, helpful and generous. This little guy was grinning merrily before I even produced my camera.

Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino is a 44-story luxury hotel casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, owned and operated by MGM Resorts International. One of the property's towers operates as THE hotel, while the top five floors of the other tower are occupied by a Four Seasons Hotel.

Mandalay Bay has 3,309 hotel rooms, 24 elevators and a casino of 135,000 sq ft (12,500 m2). Adjacent to the hotel are the 1,000,000 sq ft (93,000 m2) Mandalay Bay Convention Center and the 12,000-seat Mandalay Bay Events Center. The Mandalay Bay Tram connects the resort to its sister properties, Excalibur and Luxor, all three of which were constructed by Circus Circus Enterprises before its sale to MGM.

The incident that happened last night appears to have been in the open area on the right of this photo, about 2/3's towards the top, originating from the opposite side of the building. Doesn't appear to be balconies - we stayed there in 2013 and I don't remember much about the rooms other than they had a lot of amenities and were very nice.
