This image shows the line-of-sight direction of the magnetic field on the Sun's disc. This kind of map is also called a ‘magnetogram’. It was measured by the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) onboard the Solar Orbiter spacecraft on 22 March 2023.
This map shows that the Sun's magnetic field is concentrated within and around sunspots. It either points outward (red) or inward (blue) wherever the sunspots lie. Elsewhere the magnetic field is much smaller, indicated by grey (no magnetic field), yellow or green (small magnetic field). The strong magnetic field inhibits convection in the Sun, because charged particles are forced to follow the magnetic field rather than following the heat-mixing convective flow. As a result, sunspots are colder than their surroundings.
Assembled from multiple high-resolution images taken by the PHI instrument, the diameter of the Sun's disc is spanned by around 8000 pixels. It is one image of a set of four, three being the first high-resolution full-disc views of the Sun from PHI and the fourth an image of the Sun's corona taken by Solar Orbiter's Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI).

#1: Thee Silver Mt. Zion: 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons(Montréal, Canada)
Though my brother in law may cringe at this, without a doubt, Thee Silver Mt. Zion put out the best album this year. I know they aren't for everyone but when Efrim Menuck sings, his sense of passion and desperation...the way he communicates devastation speaks to me in a way that makes me think...this, this is the reason why music is here.
I know some have criticized Thee Silver Mt. Zion as pretentious but as someone who has been following Efrim Menuck from Godspeed You! Black Emperor to this point, I feel more than anything it's disarming and also...well, honest. Every time I put on this record, I feel a storm of emotion inside of me waiting to pour out. It startles me but I can't help it. When Efrim sings "Some hearts are true," it's the most hopeful moment. When Efrim sings "One Million Died to Make This Sound," my body was meant for collapse. He's singing my thoughts. He's singing my fears, my prayers. All that is in me is coming out of that dear man's throat.
And let's not forget the strength of the instrumentation and the joint choral effect (of the tra la la band) the album and live performance takes on. It creates the sense we're all in this together and we're all feeling it together. We may each have 13 blues for thirteen moons but we're sharing it together and, in a way, that redeems this pitiful life.
It's true that Thee Silver Mt. Zion, particularly because of Efrim's pained vocal delivery, is an acquired taste. If, like me, you acquire it, you'll probably never let it go.
#2 Karkwa: Le Volume du Vent

Yes, another band from Montréal but this one sings in French! Ok, I literally first heard this band for the first time yesterday...skeptical? How 'bout if I told you that they are at times like, as Bill Pearis ( soundbites.typepad.com/soundbites/) aptly describes , a French Canadian Radiohead?
The album begins with a real intensity with Le Compteur before settling down into tracks like Oubile Pas, Le Frimas, and Le Temps Mort later on.
Well, anyhow, I'm in love with this record. It's passionate but also very melodic and urgent at the same time. Sort of like being simultaneously heavy and ethereal. Too bad they won't accept my American money but you can buy this most recent album on itunes. Have a listen...if melodramatic songs are your thing, I think you'll be pleased:
#3 Portishead: Third

I know there were many who were disappointed with this album but, if you're like me, you're grasping for just about every last scrap Beth Gibbons will give you
Now, I know this one is a little unpredictable and I know it's also a bit inconsistent. The album starts out with a startling track, "Silence" that builds in a completely hypnotizing way (especially if you are listening to it for the fourth time that night whilst editing photos at around 3:30 am when you begin to realize the next day is coming.) It cuts you off just as you truly sense the overall motion of it, though and the jarring effect is a testament to just how effective the song is.
"Machine Gun" has a similar overall feel and I think it could be said that it's Beth Gibbons at her most overtly powerful. But, we must also try to appreciate the random unpredictability of the album overall which I feel Beth Gibbons makes work in a very atypical way. Quite a few of the tracks are those that cannot be easily taken out of context and they are also the kinds of songs you need to give some extra time to. In a way, it feels like we see a portrait of a woman in all of her moods and this feels not only right but very honest. Just listen to "The Rip" as the day starts to peak through the dark curtain of night and you'll see what I mean.

#4 The High Dials: Moon Country

If you were to ask me what genre of music I love the most, above all others, I would look at you and say, without any hesitation: Psychedelic. It's something within me that I can't describe. Oh, shoegaze is wonderful and punk has it's place but it's the psychedelic music that speaks to me most. Without it, life is a very bleak place indeed.
That said, The High Dials have put out their third full length double album, Moon Country, and it is magnificent. What amazes me every time I hear the band on album or see them play is how utterly talented every member is. I feel most alive by listening and, even though they are playing songs in the genre that made bands like The Pretty Things and Love great, every time I listen to The High Dials, it seems so fresh to me. In other words, even though the influences peaked so long ago, there's such a joy and bliss renewed that comes to me. It's like I was experiencing it for the first time and it's wonderful. This album as well as 2005's War of the Wakening Phantoms are stellar and if you get a chance to see them live, do whatever you can not to miss it. As I told lead singer Trevor Anderson recently when I saw him play a show in Chicago, "I swear, if aliens were to land on this planet and hold everyone hostage, demanding even just one reason why the entire human race shouldn't be obliterated, I would play them your music."
"How can you be so sure, " he said, "that the aliens wouldn't like reggae dub better?"
#5 Spiritualized: Songs in A&E
(Rugby, England)
I really thought Spiritualized had lost it. Seriously! I felt 2003's Amazing Grace was just an album full of rehashed melodies from previous albums and that, frankly, Jason Pierce was starting to lose his magic. Then, another proper full length live album took five years to emerge. In that time, Pierce was going through so many issues including a serious hospital stay. No doubt he did some soul searching to produce this brilliant album, complete with tracks that suggest the power and energy of "Electricity" such as "You Lie You Cheat" but with a delicateness that suggest a fallen angel as in "Sweet Talk." Don't tell me I'm the only one that cries every time I hear "Death take your fiddle."
Needless to say, the gospel choir Pierce chose to back him up both live and on album was one of the best musical decisions he's ever made. Jason, you set my soul on fire.

#6 Juana Molina: Un Dia

Dear Juana,
You make my days complete...how could anyone be so complex and yet so soothing. I listen to you in my darkest hour and you are so comforting and at the same time incredibly intriguing as a songwriter...your compositions of songs work in a way no American songwriter that I know of can come close to. You are the reason why music will never die. In this modern age, you can be innovative and still provide a sense of stability somehow to this ever changing world. For that, no words seem to do you justice. You are creative in a way that mere syllables strung together seem almost wrong to describe as they are not enough.

#7 The Magnetic Fields: Distortion

It probably comes to some of you as no surprise that I am a fan of Stephin Merritt's wry and insightful lyrics...his way of analyzing relationships and intimacy in a way that few can. I have such a history with this band, beginning so long ago when I was a college student. I loved all of Merritt's stories and even his lyrics when he was most jaded. I couldn't settle for one disc of the 69 Lovesongs...I had to have all three.
Distortion is not without a great deal of classic Merritt wit but the great guitar fuzz effect on much of the album makes it even more engaging to listen to. In a way the feedback and lo fi quality of it makes it seem dated but it's the kind of dates that got you through many of your years so far.
It's always interesting to me how live they tend to strip this down into an acoustic set. Both have their Merritt but I greatly prefer to hear the songs in this way with their full energy realized and without the strange personality of Stephin's making me feel more than slightly uncomfortable.

#8 Orouni: Jump Out the Window
(Paris, France)
Orouni came out with his/their second full length album this year and the only way I'd like these magical songs better is if they were sung in French. Instead, they are sung in English but with a rather enchanting accent.
The cello arrangements are really lovely and so are the beautiful backup vocals of Mina Tindle, Mlie, and Emma. There's a real depth that Orouni has reached at times lyrically and some don't strike you at first but get stuck in your head with the accompanying melody line. There's an odd sense of innocence to the songs, especially the melodies, that make them all the more endearing like a bunch of comforting friends.
#9 Clinic: Do It!
(Liverpool, England)
Ok, you know those times when it's 8am, your parents are visiting in less than 24 hours and you've slept only about five in the last three days???? Well, you may be crawling to the shower and broom but, before that, do yourself a favor and put on Clinic's Do It! It's the get yourself in gear and get some work done type of album. Oh, and also, you might have to take some breaks to dance. Though I found Clinic's live show a little shticky with the surgical masks and the Hawaiian shirts, their live sound even more so brought out these gems.
Even though it's really upbeat overall and just gives me so much more artificial energy, I think Clinic is probably more of an acquired taste, especially relative to more typical music in all three genres of rock, pop, and even dance. Mainly, it's the overly nasal vocals that might turn some off again.
Funny thing about Clinic, when Walking With Thee hit the independent radiowaves back in 2002, I was so repulsed with the sound of it. I literally couldn't stand it and the college radio station in Chicago (WLUW) played it to death! I got to the point where I was changing the radio station any time the title track was played. I HATED Clinic. I wanted to scream how much I hated them! Why were they taking up space on the airwaves, I wanted to know!?!?!
Then, one day I woke up. It was still 2002 and it was on a Sunday. I looked out of the window and it was pouring rain. I turned on the radio but that didn't have what I was looking for. What did I want? Need? Crave with every fiber of my being? That's right! I had to have Walking With Thee and I would travel across the city at warp speed during a thunderstorm just to have it. I tell you this story just so if you're turned off for the first time, realize those songs you listen to might somehow come back to haunt you...they have very strange powers.

A joint venture between Phil Elverum of Mount Eerie fame and Julie Doiron has led to such lush and beautiful melodies that really resonate. The chemistry and dynamics of their two voices work together so well it recalls the harmony and beauty of the way Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel sang together so long ago at times, only if Art was a female. Hmmm...imagine the possibilities that might have brought!

Magnitude of in-plane magnetic field from the same runs as the previous one. I think I have an obsession with these images.
Sometimes I hear two songs ing my head at once. So listen, this is the end of my Infinitely Late at Night series which focused on lyrics by The Magnetic Fields for their song "Infinitely Late at Night" but PJ Harvey's A Woman A Man Walked By also happened while it was Infinitely late at night. The woman is in the center of the frame sitting down in the the infinitely late evening. The man is on the left hand side, ready to pass her.
Will he look while he passes? Will he say a word or two? Will he hum a song? Will he speed up or will he go slow? Will he take the woman and the night all in together?

All images you have ever seen of the Sun were taken from near the Sun's equator, from within the ecliptic plane where all planets and nearly all spacecraft orbit the Sun. In February 2025, Solar Orbiter became the first Sun-watching spacecraft ever to tilt its orbit out of the ecliptic plane.
In June 2025, the ESA-led mission to provided humanity with the first-ever clear views of the Sun's south pole. All ten of Solar Orbiter’s scientific instruments will collect unprecedented data in the years to come.
As we've never clearly seen the poles before, Solar Orbiter may uncover unexpected structures or movements, including polar vortices (swirling gas) similar to those seen around the poles of Venus and Saturn. Additionally, more of the Sun's magnetic field at the poles opens up to space, and Solar Orbiter will be able to see how this changes throughout the solar cycle.
Solar Orbiter’s groundbreaking high-latitude observations are key to understanding the Sun’s magnetic field and why it flips roughly every 11 years, coinciding with a peak in solar activity. Current models and predictions of the 11-year solar cycle fall short of being able to predict exactly when and how powerfully the Sun will reach its most active state.
Additionally, particle and magnetic field detectors on the spacecraft will be the first to track the movement of solar material – including solar wind, bursts of charged particles called coronal mass ejections, and particles moving close to the speed of light – away from the Sun’s equator. This can inform and improve space weather forecasts, important for reducing its impact on Earth.
Finally, measurements of the Sun’s magnetic field at higher latitudes allow Solar Orbiter to map more of the Sun’s global magnetic field as it changes throughout the solar cycle. While the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) instrument can measure local magnetic fields at the Sun’s surface, Solar Orbiter’s magnetometer (MAG) instrument measures the magnetic field near the spacecraft. The latter can reveal the large-scale structure of the Sun’s magnetic field.

Apologies for the repetitive series of posts today, but it's rare to have the opportunity to photograph a good display from the aurora borealis (Northern Lights) in East Yorkshire. A strong and persistent solar storm hit the Earth on 23rd March 2023 and my aurora alert App started to ping. A quick glance out of a north facing window confirmed both clear skies AND visible aurora! That was enough to send us all scurrying for coats, boots, camera and tripod and see us on a brisk trot up a hill behind the house to get clear of the streetlighting. Thankfully, the mild weather and the exertion was enough for us to stay warm for over an hour of aurora watching and photography. I took over 200 frames, almost back to back, so will likely post a pseudo time-lapse movie once I have assembled the frames to export them as an mp4 or avi.
Processed from raw using Capture One Pro 23 and then denoised using Topaz denoise v3.7.
The Spectral Imaging of the Coronal Environment (SPICE) instrument on the ESA-led Solar Orbiter spacecraft got its first good look at the Sun's south pole in March 2025.
Here we see SPICE's velocity map of charged carbon particles (ions) at the Sun's south pole. These ions live in the transition region, a thin layer around the Sun where the temperature rapidly increases from around 10 000 °C to hundreds of thousands of degrees. (Click here to see a comparison to SPICE's intensity map.)
Blue and red indicate how fast the carbon ions are moving towards and away from the Solar Orbiter spacecraft, respectively. Darker blue and red patches are related to plasma flowing faster due to small plumes or jets.
The data shown here were recorded on 22–23 March 2025, when Solar Orbiter was facing the Sun from an angle of 17° below the solar equator. The image is composed of three observations that were subsequently stitched together.

The Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights over the village of Lauvsnes in Norways Nord Trondelag.
A group of us were in Norway on a 7 day Eagle photography trip. On this particular night we'd come back from the pub slightly the worse for wear, and suddenly this totally unexpected, epic display of the lights began.
Lauvsnes is a little too far south for displays anything like this usually, and it caught all the locals by surprise too.
Sadly we were stuck in the village with no transport to get out of the light pollution - we'd given our driver the night off and he'd taken his family out on a jolly to Namsos which is miles away!
Despite the location the display was just mind-blowing and is something I'll never forget - it makes you feel very insignificant in natures grand scheme of things - like a mere blip on the screen!

I found the Arc de Triomphe and was assaulted by a ghost I could not see. It was a strange sort of cinema and, as I insisted that the architecture would save me, he laughed and his fingers swirled around my ears. "You will never forget the ghost of Paris, my dear," he wailed "it has infected you forever like a strange virus with no cure."
I longed for the day as the strange family waited for me at the top of the stairs. For a few solitary moments, I forgot where I was and who I was. I was drowning in the darkness of light and was being ridiculed by those who had already adjusted to it. "You are a tourist!" they accused, pointing as if the night wasn't some thick pastry. Their derisive laughter was an epileptic dance. "You are too!" I pointed back hesitently, worried about what might happen. "Yes," they acknowledged, "But we know where our place is in this world and you never never will. Silly girl to be walking through Paris at night. Did you think you would recover? Did you think you would wake up the same again?"
No. I didn't. I knew the truth.

Glass tubing equipped with electrodes is evacuated by a vacuum pump (3 inches of mercury), a high voltage from antique spark coil is applied (approximately 1700 volts), forming a low-energy plasma, and then the effect of a strong magnetic field from an electromagnet, modified from an iron-core transformer core carrying much direct current (about 6 amps), is observed in darkened room.
Constriction of the pale violet-colored low-energy plasma within the magnetic field was observed and photographed as part of a science project.

Similar experiments were performed by Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) with alternating current in the late 1880s except using much higher voltages at extremely high frequencies.
This graphic shows an exotic object in our galaxy called SGR 0418+5729 (SGR 0418 for short). As described in our press release, SGR 0418 is a magnetar, a type of neutron star that has a relatively slow spin rate and generates occasional large blasts of X-rays.
The only plausible source for the energy emitted in these outbursts is the magnetic energy stored in the star. Most magnetars have extremely high magnetic fields on their surface that are ten to a thousand times stronger than for the average neutron star. New data shows that SGR 0418 doesn’t fit that pattern. It has a surface magnetic field similar to that of mainstream neutron stars.
In the image on the left, data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory shows SGR 0418 as a pink source in the middle. Optical data from the William Herschel telescope in La Palma and infrared data from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope are shown in red, green and blue.
On the right is an artist’s impression showing a close-up view of SGR 0418. This illustration highlights the weak surface magnetic field of the magnetar, and the relatively strong, wound-up magnetic field lurking in the hotter interior of the star. The X-ray emission seen with Chandra comes from a small hot spot, not shown in the illustration. At the end of the outburst this spot has a radius of only about 160 meters, compared with a radius for the whole star of about 12 km.
The researchers monitored SGR 0418 for over three years using Chandra, ESA's XMM-Newton as well as NASA's Swift and RXTE satellites. They were able to make an accurate estimate of the strength of the external magnetic field by measuring how its rotation speed changes during an X-ray outburst. These outbursts are likely caused by fractures in the crust of the neutron star precipitated by the buildup of stress in the stronger magnetic field lying below the surface.
By modeling the evolution of the cooling of the neutron star and its crust, as well as the gradual decay of its magnetic field, the researchers estimated that SGR 0418 is about 550,000 years old. This makes SGR 0418 older than most other magnetars, and this extended lifetime has probably allowed the surface magnetic field strength to decline over time. Because the crust weakened and the interior magnetic field is relatively strong, outbursts could still occur.
The implications of this result for understanding supernova explosions and the number and evolution of magnetars is discussed in the press release.
SGR 0418 is located in the Milky Way galaxy at a distance of about 6,500 light years from Earth. These new results on SGR 0418 appear online and will be published in the June 10, 2013 issue of The Astrophysical Journal. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., manages the Chandra program for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory controls Chandra's science and flight operations from Cambridge, Mass.

It's almost as if music seems to heighten every emotion. You might be going to a show to see a band but there's all of these elements outside of your control. You might be anxious about meeting someone there, the aggressiveness of the crowd, or arriving too late. Set times might change or you might be waiting in a super hot and poorly ventilated packed space for a musician who is an hour plus late.
Going to a show has all of these factors for those who aren't shooting it. For those who are photographing, there's a whole new set. Some venues are inconsistent about whether they will have a photopit up and you never seem to know until you actually get there. For us, a band going on early means, if the venue follows the strict 3 song limit, we might not get a chance to photograph that musician period. With an aggressive crowd, we also risk not only broken bones but thousands of dollars of camera equipment that may not be ensured breaking. And, of course, dark lighting or nonexistent lighting for us means our coverage will look terrible and if it's a band we really care about, we can't help but stress about that. Also, even though so many of us do this for free out of love for the band, it's really not uncommon for the publicist or the venue to mess up and for us not to be on the list or even be allowed to take photos. This even happened to me just last Saturday. It can be one of the most nerve wracking experiences out there just to use your camera to capture the memories.
But above all, for me, the most anxiety is usually caused when I'm photographing someone quiet such as Laura Marling or Mirah. I never like to get in the way of others physically so I try to show up on the early side and try not to stand right in front of someone shorter than me. But that clicking sound of the shutter closing can be rather thunderous.
I'd been a Magnetic Fields fan for well over a decade when they played at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music in 2008. I was lucky that my friend Sei Jin bought enough tickets early on when I was at work that Cinchel and I could buy two. Tickets were $25 a piece. For those unfamiliar with the venue, it's unfortunately not my favorite. It tends to host quieter acts in an environment I find stifling. Everyone sits down as if we're all a little too suburban to suffer standing. There is never any photopit and the light can be quite variable which means if you don't have a ticketed seat right up front, you aren't going to get any good shots.
I photographed Magnetic Fields for Venus Zine and I should have realized when it took so long to get the photopass that the band really wasn't all that interested in getting their picture taken. The first thing that happened before the show even began was a rude person at will call who told me that after I was finished shooting my ONE first song, I needed to leave. I had to explain I had actually paid $25 for the privilege of shooting the band for one song, which is rather unfortunate.
But the worst part came later. Stephin Merritt doesn't play with heavy distortion despite the fact that they were touring on an album by that name at the time. I've also heard he's a bit of an antisocial sort of person. Still, I really love his music and was just as anxious as I was excited.
The real horrible thing happened when right before the first song, Claudia Gonson turned to me-I was the only photographer there-and though I was taking photos from the seat and had purchased the tickets, though I wasn't using flash or being obtrusive, she says, "You KNOW it's only one song right?" It was unnecessary and, because it was directed right at me, it drew everyone's attention my way negatively even though that had never been my intention.
I still love the music but sometimes the more you get to know the personalities of those who sing the lyrics you know by heart and write the melodies that change your life, unfortunately, *sometimes* the more you dislike them as people.
I think Stephin Merritt is a genius but I'm kind of glad he's not my next door neighbor or something.

From the night of September 12, 2014, just as the geomagnetic storm was subsiding, and the moon was rising. The combination of elements reminds me of a calm summer evening, even though when the photograph was taken it was starting to feel like fall.

The transit of Venus across the sun, 2012.06.05. Venus is just a little bit smaller than the Earth, though since it's between the sun and my camera, it appears larger against the sun that it would be at the same distance.

The Sun appears to be eyeballing us in this unique portrayal of the total solar eclipse of 13/14 November 2012, which combines ground-based images (blue ring) with views from ESA’s Proba-2 (false-colour central disc) and ESA/NASA’s SOHO satellites (background).
Loops of magnetic field lines and ‘streamers’ can clearly be seen in the ground-based white-light images, spilling over into the corresponding wide-field view from SOHO as the solar wind blows these features out into space.
The connection between the ground- and space-based images provides a unique opportunity to correlate difficult-to-see regions of the Sun’s atmosphere, visible only during the fleeting moments of a total solar eclipse, with well-known features on the solar disc and the wider solar environment.

This image shows a molecular cloud in the constellation of Corona Australis, or the Southern Crown, based on a combination of data from ESA’s Herschel and Planck space telescopes. The bright areas in the picture shows the emission by interstellar dust grains in three different wavelengths observed by Herschel (250, 350, and 500 microns) and the lines crossing the image in a ‘drapery pattern’ represent the magnetic field orientation (based on the Planck data.)
This molecular cloud appears as a cascading waterfall, spanning around five degrees along the horizontal side of the image. It contains a small open cluster called the Coronet, which is located at the brightest region of the image towards the left and is home to several variable stars, along with the nebula NGC 6729.
The image shows Corona Australis North on the left and Corona Australis South at the right. Corona Australis North has the densest star-forming regions of the complex, whereas Corona Australis South displays structures that are comet-like in appearance and has less star formation. In this image, the well-defined filament flows from the bright area on the top left towards the lower right, and a broader and fainter streamer flows to the upper right.

We are very lucky to have seen an amazing display of dancing colors, and at the same time the end of the sunset. At their peak, the lights were bright enough to read by! What a show!

The Aquila Rift is a region that spans the constellations of Aquila and Serpens and contains the Aquila Rift cloud complex. This harbours the Serpens star-forming region, a part of which is shown in this image, which has widespread filaments.
The bright area towards the left is a network of filaments contains the Westerhout 40 (W40) star forming region. W40 contains both massive and low-mass stars, and the ionising radiation from the newly formed massive stars has created a so-called H II region, which is a cloud of partially ionised hydrogen gas. Around 520 young stars are located in W40. The bright area visible on the right of the image is the young star MWC 297, which powers the diffuse nebula Sh 2-62 around it.

A close-up image taken with the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) High Resolution Telescope on ESA’s Solar Orbiter on 28 May 2020. The area is approximately 200 000 km x 200 000 km across and is centred on the middle of the Sun. It shows the Sun’s granulation pattern that results from the movement of hot plasma under the Sun’s visible surface.

This collage shows Solar Orbiter's view of the Sun's south pole on 16–17 March 2025, from a viewing angle of around 15° below the solar equator. This was the mission’s first high-angle observation campaign, a few days before reaching its current maximum viewing angle of 17°.
Until now, spacecraft (and ground-based telescopes) have never been able to clearly see the Sun's poles, because none ever reached further than 7° from the Sun's equator. (The ESA/NASA Ulysses mission (1990–2009) flew over the Sun's poles but did not carry any imaging instruments.)
These data were recorded by three of Solar Orbiter’s scientific instruments: the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI), the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI), and the Spectral Imaging of the Coronal Environment (SPICE) instrument. The instruments each observe the Sun in a different way.
PHI captures the visible light sent out by iron particles (617.3 nanometre wavelength, top left), revealing the Sun's surface (photosphere). PHI also maps the Sun’s surface magnetic field along the spacecraft's line of sight (top centre). In this map, blue indicates positive magnetic field, pointing towards the spacecraft, and red indicates negative magnetic field.
EUI images the Sun in ultraviolet light (17.4 nanometre wavelength, top right), revealing the million-degree charged gas in the Sun’s outer atmosphere, the corona. This high-energy light is sent out by charged iron particles.
The SPICE instrument (various wavelengths, bottom row) captures light coming from different layers above the Sun's surface, from the chromosphere right above the Sun's surface all the way to the Sun's corona. Each image captured by SPICE shows different temperatures of charged gas, at 10 000 °C, 32 000 °C, 320 000 °C, 630 000 °C and 1 000 000 °C.
By comparing and analysing the complementary observations made by these three imaging instruments, we can learn about how material moves in the Sun’s outer layers. This may reveal unexpected patterns, such as polar vortices (swirling gas) similar to those seen around the poles of Venus and Saturn.
These groundbreaking new observations are also key to understanding the Sun’s magnetic field and why it flips roughly every 11 years, coinciding with a peak in solar activity. Current models and predictions of the 11-year solar cycle fall short of being able to predict exactly when and how powerfully the Sun will reach its most active state.

ESA’s Solar Orbiter is revealing the many faces of the Sun. The Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) Full Sun Imager (FSI) took the images in the top row and far right column across the week following 30 May 2020, and contributed to the central image.
The yellow images, taken at the extreme ultraviolet wavelength of 17 nanometres, show the Sun’s outer atmosphere, the corona, which exists at a temperature of around one million degrees. The red images, taken at a slightly longer wavelength of 30 nanometres, show the Sun’s transition region, which is an interface between the lower and upper layers of the solar atmosphere. In this region, which is only about 100 km thick, the temperature increases by a factor of up to 100 to reach the one million degrees of the corona.
Solar Orbiter will travel around the Sun and out of the ecliptic plane, which loosely defines where the planets orbit. So, EUI will be able to image the far side of the Sun as well as the solar poles. The middle image shows projected, simultaneous solar images from EUI FSI (red) at Solar Orbiter’s position during its first perihelion, the closest point in its orbit to the Sun, and the NASA Solar Dynamic Observatory mission (gray) in Earth orbit.
The image in the middle of the first column, was taken by the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) instrument on 18 June 2020. It shows a “magnetic map of the Sun” that reveals the magnetic field strengths on the solar surface. In the bottom right-hand corner there is the beginning of an active region. It can be seen from the closely neighbouring black and white regions, which signify opposite magnetic polarities. In times of increased magnetic activity, plots like this will show many more such active regions.
The blue, white and red image at bottom left is a tachogram of the Sun, again taken with PHI. It shows the line of sight velocity of the Sun, with the blue side turning to us and the red side turning away. In times of increased magnetic activity, this plot will become more turbulent.
Next to this image, is a view of the Sun in visible light, taken by PHI on 18 June 2020. There are no sunspots because there is very little magnetic activity.

Apologies for the repetitive series of posts today, but it's rare to have the opportunity to photograph a good display from the aurora borealis (Northern Lights) in East Yorkshire. A strong and persistent solar storm hit the Earth on 23rd March 2023 and my aurora alert App started to ping. A quick glance out of a north facing window confirmed both clear skies AND visible aurora! That was enough to send us all scurrying for coats, boots, camera and tripod and see us on a brisk trot up a hill behind the house to get clear of the streetlighting. Thankfully, the mild weather and the exertion was enough for us to stay warm for over an hour of aurora watching and photography. I took over 200 frames, almost back to back, so will likely post a pseudo time-lapse movie once I have assembled the frames to export them as an mp4 or avi.
Processed from raw using Capture One Pro 23 and then denoised using Topaz denoise v3.7.
This image shows the Chamaeleon II molecular cloud based on a combination of data from ESA’s Herschel and Planck space telescopes. The bright areas in the picture shows the emission by interstellar dust grains in three different wavelengths observed by Herschel (250, 350, and 500 microns) and the lines crossing the image in a ‘drapery pattern’ represent the magnetic field orientation (based on the Planck data.)
The Chamaeleon cloud complex consists of three molecular clouds of very different morphology and stages of evolution: Chamaeleon I, II and III, with Chamaleon III having no young stars.
Chamaeleon II, despite its name, would not be able to camouflage in with Chamaeleon I even though they have similar sizes and masses. The region is still actively forming stars and and has a smaller stellar population of around 60. It doesn’t have defined ridge like in Chamaeleon I, and is dominated by clumps.

It is rainy season again and it is my still life season too.
I saw a paper clip picture in a photo magazine and this has inspired me to do something similar. I don't have the good Photoshop techniques like what the photographer has done with his winning picture.
Just point, shoot and post to Flickr. I even did not shoot with cable release. I have been too lazy.
This is fun still life with paper clip floating on water in the frying pan borrowed from my wife (again). And of course it is done in my still life studio i.e. my kitchen!

The Musca clouds are part of the Chamaeleon cloud complex, where the vast star-forming region overlaps with the constellation of Musca, the Fly. Resembling a streak of lightning, the well-defined, elongated molecular cloud spans three degrees across the sky. It is also sometimes called the Dark Doodad Nebula.
Magnetic field lines clearly appear to be perpendicular to the main filament in the cloud. Striations are present, although not necessarily connected to the main filament, and there are also denser hair-like strands – structures attached to the main filament. Strands are distributed all along the main filament.
Musca is similar to the B213 filament in the Taurus Molecular Cloud in terms of perpendicular striations, however Musca lacks the fine substructure of the Taurus filament.

This image shows the Chamaeleon I molecular cloud based on a combination of data from ESA’s Herschel and Planck space telescopes. The Chamaeleon cloud complex consists of three molecular clouds of very different morphology and stages of evolution: Chamaeleon I, II and III, with Chamaleon III having no young stars. An image of Chamaeleon II is available here.
Chamaeleon I is a star-forming region with more than 200 young stars. A massive, newly-formed star powers the IC 2631 reflection nebula, visible at the top of the image. Two other reflection nebulae, called Cederblad 110 and Cederblad 111, are located in the centre of the image.
At the end its star formation phase, Chamaeleon I has a central ridge-like structure, and there are dense clumps embedded in the ridge. Faint striations can be seen in the cloud, aligned with the magnetic field.

Sólheimasandur is one of the most remote places were to spend a night chasing northern lights. Hearing the atlantic ocean yelling in the complete darkness was a quite scaring experience. Fortunately the wind and the temperature were quite bearable. Two years ago (when a I shot the picture hereafter) I could barely stand against the wind.
The fuselage was light-painted with a warm (on the left) and a cold (on the right) light source (thanks Sanny!). I lighted the plane interior with a Canon Speedlite, by triggering the camera through the canon "Eos Remote" App for my iPhone and the handy Wifi feature of my canon 6D, which was standing on a tripod at about 40m distance. Once finished playing with the flash I admit having some difficulties to locate my camera, since was completely hidden by the darkness!
The composition is quite weak. Again I found quite difficult to match the shapes of the northern lights with the foreground object.
This image is a ‘tachogram’ of the Sun, taken with the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) Full Disc Telescope on ESA’s Solar Orbiter on 18 June 2020. It shows the line of sight velocity of the Sun, with the blue side turning to us and the red side turning away.

The Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) on ESA’s Solar Orbiter measures the magnetic field at the Sun’s surface and allows the investigation of the Sun’s interior via the technique of helioseismology.
The top left image is a view of the Sun taken by PHI’s Full Disc Telescope on 18 June 2020. This is a visible light image and represents what we would see with the naked eye. There are no sunspots visible because the Sun is displaying only low levels of magnetic activity at the moment. Below this is a close-up image taken by PHI’s High Resolution Telescope on 28 May 2020. The area is approximately 200 000 km x 200 000 km across and is centred on the middle of the Sun. It shows the Sun’s granulation pattern that results from the movement of hot plasma under the Sun’s visible surface.
The top image of the middle column reveals the magnetic properties of the same region. Dark and light areas show the north and south magnetic polarities of those areas. The full disc image below shows a similar magnetic map but for the whole Sun. Taken on 18 June 2020, there is a large magnetically active region in the lower right-hand quadrant of the Sun.
The top image of the right-hand column is a ‘tachogram’ of the Sun, again taken with the PHI Full Disc Telescope on 18 June 2020. It shows the line of sight velocity of the Sun, with the blue side turning to us and the red side turning away. The close-up image below is a similar tachogram but for the close-up area of the Sun that PHI imaged on 28 May 2020. Here, the granulation pattern can be seen as well as the change from blue to red, which signifies the overall rotation of the Sun. In this image, yellow (rather than white) denotes the zero line-of-sight velocity.
