Northbound Green Mountain train XR-1 slows to do some work at Ludlow, VT on March 3, 1981 with RS-1 No. 405.
Ludlow Castle is a ruined medieval fortification in the town of the same name in the English county of Shropshire, standing on a promontory overlooking the River Teme.
……. Another view of the Weir on the River Teme at Ludlow. This bridge was formerly know as the New Bridge when it was built by Thomas Telford back in 1823 - wouldn’t mind a penny per gallon thats flowed under it since then!! ….. Alan:-)

A very pretty Shropshire market town and a place where Henry VIII was raised in his earlier years...it's certainly well worth a visit.
An abandoned house in Ludlow, California on old Route 66. At least I think it was a house. According to one of my Flickr friends, this was once the nicest home in all of Ludlow.

Stokesay Castle is one of the finest surviving fortified manor houses in England, and situated at Stokesay in Shropshire. It was largely built in its present form in the late 13th century by Laurence de Ludlow, on the earlier castle (some of which still survives) founded by its original owners the de Lacy family, from whom it passed to their de Verdun heirs, who retained feudal overlordship of Stokesay until at least 1317. Laurence 'of' Ludlow was one of the leading wool merchants in England, who intended it to form a secure private house and generate income as a commercial estate. Laurence's descendants continued to own the castle until the 16th century, when it passed through various private owners.
Architecturally, Stokesay Castle is "one of the best-preserved medieval fortified manor houses in England", according to historian Henry Summerson. The castle comprises a walled, moated enclosure, with an entrance way through a 17th-century timber and plaster gatehouse. Inside, the courtyard faces a stone hall and solar block, protected by two stone towers. The hall features a 13th-century wooden-beamed ceiling, and 17th-century carved figures ornament the gatehouse and the solar. The castle was never intended to be a serious military fortification, but its style was intended to echo the much larger castles being built by Edward I in North Wales. Originally designed as a prestigious, secure, comfortable home, the castle has changed very little since the 13th century, and is a rare, surviving example of a near complete set of medieval buildings. English Heritage has minimised the amount of interpretative material displayed at the property and kept the castle largely unfurnished.
…… Had the annual trip to Ludlow today to get the Christmas Cake & Christmas puddings - Jill’s Mom always made them and these from the Farm Shop (Ludlow Foods) are the nearest we have ever found! Jill had a whizz around town and the Market whilst I went hunting for my #327 shot of the day. After all the rain of late there was plenty of water in the River Teme and coming over the weir….. Alan:-)

Green Mountain train 264 returns west toward Rutland with a pair of reds leading seen here passing Ludlow Depot with some of the last fall color hanging on.
…A shot taken earlier in the year and I guess as it would be looking right now as Autumn declines & Winter sets in. Take care on the roads as high winds & rain lash the UK and anywhere else that is also in the grip of winter. Alan:-)……

An eastbound Santa Fe intermodal train approaches Ludlow, California, on March 8, 1995. AT&SF No. 5013, a 1966-built EMD SD40, leads the train through a Mojave Desert that has hints of some green flora due to springtime rains.
Over the border today to our beautiful neighbour County of Shropshire, a first visit to Ludlow castle, I was happy to capture this image with the tree shadow filling the foreground. Very pleased with the visit, plenty to see and of course a walk about the town testing some of the many eateries !
The construction of Ludlow Castle started around 1085, with many later additions in the following two centuries. It is one of the most interesting castles in the Marches, in a dominant and imposing position high above the river Teme. It features examples of architecture from the Norman, Medieval and Tudor periods. The building of the castle led to the development of Ludlow itself, at first grouped around the castle; the impressive ruins of the castle occupy the oldest part of Ludlow.
In the late 12th and early 13th centuries the castle was extended, and part of the grid pattern of streets immediately to the south was obscured by the enlarged outer bailey. From 1233 onwards the town walls were constructed; Ludlow Castle stood within the circuit of the walls.
Ludlow Castle has played a key role in some turbulent events in English history. One of its 14th-century owners, Roger Mortimer, helped his mistress Queen Isabella, in the overthrow of her husband King Edward II. In 1473, the Prince of Wales and his brother were held here before their mysterious death in the Tower of London. In 1502 Prince Arthur, Henry VII's son and heir to the throne, died at Ludlow.
VTR 307 heads east over Ludlow Trestle with the Tuesday morning edition of the Green Mountain foliage excursion bound for Chester, VT. Foliage hasn't quite hit peak, but the colors around the Okemo Ski Resort still looked very good.

Ludlow Castle with Dinham Weir on the river Teme, Shropshire, England, UK
The river Teme rises in the Kerry Hills in mid Wales and meanders a total of 76 miles (or 122 km) into the River Severn just below Worcester. Before the construction of the weirs, the Teme was extremely fast flowing and loud – which is how Ludlow, or loud hill, obtained its name.
The nicest black and white building that I saw on my last visit to UK. It wasn't far from where I used to live.
