The Wytch Farm oil field started production in 1979 with crude railed from the railhead at Furzebrook to Fawley.
In the late 1980s production increased and a pipeline was opened from Wytch Farm to Hamble and crude oil traffic by rail ceased. However, production of natural gas won from the oil field also increased and this was liquefied and conveyed by rail from 1990 until 2005 as production dropped.
The LPG traffic was railed to a terminal at Hallen Marsh, north of Bristol. Originally the trains were routed via Salisbury but for most of their years of operation they ran via Reading and Swindon.
Powered by Class 47s at the very start of traffic, the LPG was hauled by Class 60s until the mid 1990s when class 58s took over.
