An Australian wood duck nodding off with a half closed eye. It is interesting to see that the lower eye lid has a tiny feather like marking. At first I thought it was a nictitating membrane.

This is image is two views a few seconds apart of the same Great Horned Owl. Owls are most unusual in that they have a very large lower eyelid, larger than the upper - virtually unique among all animals. This allows the owl to open the lower eyelid, seeing the ground below while still shielding the eye from sun with the closed upper eyelid.
In the view to the right, the GHO has a full view of me and the ground.
