While not with a traditional black background, I would call this a low-key image due to the strong, single light source and intense shadows.
using 1 off camera speed light on 1/16 power i think.....
Must remember to pull subject off the wall to avoid shadowing. While a shadow works for some it doesn't for others.

For this photo I put my camera on portrait mode and I decreased the blacks while editing. I really like this photo because of the way the left side of her face stands out.
