This sleepy village in the Argonne earned its place in history books when on 21 June 1791 king Louis XVI and the royal family, hoping to escape the revolutionary government in Paris, were stopped and arrested here. Had they succeeded the Revolution might have gone in another direction.

Chateau de Beaumesnil, l’Eure, Normandy, France
In baroque style and nicknamed the "Norman Versailles" en.normandie-tourisme.fr/normandy-tourism-109-2.html , Beaumesnil features among the most beautiful châteaux built under the reign of Louis XIII in France.
The magnificent façade of bricks and stones, the wealth of the decoration, multiple carved heads above the windows give this castle built between 1633 an 1640 a splendid appearance just before the age of the sun king Louis XVI. It replaced a medieval castle whose “donjon” (keep) has been retained as a folly in the moat. Elegantly furnished, the residence houses a very beautiful library and a remarkable museum of old book binders. No less superb, the park extending over more than 60 hectares which surrounds the castle was designed by La Quintinie, a student of Le Nôtre in Versailles. en.normandie-tourisme.fr/pcu/beaumesnil,-le-chateau-des-g... more in French here www.chateaubeaumesnil.com.

Let them eat cake,
Said Marie Antoinette.
So they chopped off her head
Until she was dead.
The solution was drastic,
The story's fantastic,
They talk of it yet.

Never have I seen a place
That reminds me of your face
'Til I heard it call to me
Like a phone call from a friend
Set in silence like a prayer
If these walls could breathe the air
They would sing a song of love
And how it sometimes has to end

Ambling up the Boulevard Malesherbes to a restaurant near La Madeleine I saw this Light and Dark. It reminded me immediately of a history lesson more than half a century ago. My teacher in usual rhetorical display was telling us about the infamous 'lettres de cachet' in France before the Revolution. You could be jailed without cause or even knowing about it if the King deigned right, thrust for as long as he liked from the light of day into the darkness of prison... I shivered, and nodded my head still in the thrall of Le Comte de Monte-Cristo.
And here I was on the street named after the very man - Chrétien-Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes (1721-1794) - who as a minister of King Louis XVI tried to put an end to this practice. Unsuccessfully.
The Light and the Dark of the French Revolution has been the topic of very many discussions. That the light of liberty then was not as clear and much more shot through with darkness than we like to think in hindsight might be illustrated by Malesherbes' life. He was unsuccessful in the 'lettres de cachet' affaire, but remained the king's minister. He was put in charge of the office overseeing the right to publish and print books and - not changing the rules - allowed 'insidious' literature into the country. In the end he defended Louis XVI at his trial but remained a luminary of free thought and political liberty. In fact, he was at odds with Voltaire, the great revolutionary, who severely clamped down on the free press.
Indeed, an instance of the light and the dark.
It was only a matter of time before Malesherbes was arrested at the end of 1793. After having been made to watch the execution of children and grandchildren, he was himself guillotined on April 22, 1794, surviving Voltaire, who died in his own bed, by six years.
This boulevard was named after Our Hero in 1824.

One of my favorite places is the Queen's Hamlet at Versailles. It is truly a storybook kind of place. I took this shot during my visit to France a while back.
Wyndham's Theatre, London - the Stalls, Royal (Dress) and Grand (Upper) Circles in the auditorium. Opened in 1899 and designed by W G R Sprague. The internal decor and plasterwork was done by J M Boekbinder. Very beautiful auditorium in Louis 16th style. Originally accommodating 1,200, the balcony (a continuation of the Upper Circle tiering) and Pit are now fully seated and spacing increased throughout to provide a total of around 800 seats. Grade 2* listed. Part of Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, and restored by them in 2008.

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water
Jack fell down and broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after.
Up got Jack, and home did trot
As fast as he could caper
He went to bed and bound his head
With vinegar and brown paper
Jack and Jill rhyme

The Ladies Reception Room is currently undergoing restoration work. The elaborate interior decoration of the first floor was designed and fabricated by Jules Allard and Sons in Paris. Rooms were fully assembled in France then disassembled, shipped to the States and reassembled on site.
Some of the Gilded Age builders sought out original boiserie but originality was usually not as important as overall effect.
There are plans to restore the third and fourth floors and open them to the public. The third floor was for family and guest bedrooms, the fourth staff rooms. The rooms on these floors are largely unfurnished but would give a better perspective on the enormity of the house and what it took to run it.

The present chapel of the Palace of Versailles is the fifth in the history of the palace. These chapels evolved with the expansion of the château and formed the focal point of the daily life of the court during the Ancien Régime.
As the focal point of Louis XIV's fourth (and last) building campaign (1699–1710), the fifth and final chapel of the château of Versailles is an unreserved masterpiece. The magnificent interior has been widely admired to the present day.
Dedicated to Saint Louis, patron saint of the Bourbons, the chapel was consecrated in 1710. The floor of the chapel itself is inlaid with polychromatic marbles, and at the foot of the steps leading to the altar is the crowned monogram of an interlaced double "L" alluding to Saint Louis and Louis XIV. The sculptural and painted decoration uses both Old Testament and New Testament themes with the half-dome of the apse decorated with Charles de la Fosse’s The Resurrection of Christ; and, above the royal tribune is Jean Jouvenet’s The Descent of the Holy Ghost upon the Virgin and the Apostles (Nolhac, 1912–1913; Walton, 1993).
During the 18th century, the chapel witnessed many court events. Marriages were celebrated in this chapel, such as the wedding of Louis XV's son the dauphin Louis with the Infanta Marie-Thérèse d'Espagne of Spain on 23 February 1745 and the wedding on 16 May 1770 of the dauphin – later Louis XVI of France – with Marie-Antoinette. - from wikipedia

The Queen’s House
This building is the most important building of the Hamlet. In fact, it is composed of two separate buildings joined by a wooden gallery, decorated with white and blue earthenware flowerpots with Marie-Antoinette’s monogram. On the right, the Queen’s House itself, the ground floor comprised of a dining room and a games room, while the first floor was made up of a large living room, a small living room and a Chinese room; on the left, the Billiard Room, the ground floor comprised of a billiard room, and a private apartment on the first floor. From the top of the gallery, the lady of Trianon, wearing a simple white muslin dress and a straw hat, could oversee the work being done in the fields.
