Sketch Journal week
These two containers are on the kitchen counter to remind me that I have to buy a new bottle of Rightbone Lotion and some strong black tea. A month later: I went to the Chinese super market to buy the lotion but had forgotten to bring the bottle to show. The old man behind the counter couldn't or didn't want to understand the word "Rightbone Lotion" and I didn't know the Chinese name for it. Shaking his head he retreated to his seat Fortunately, I could show him this sketch (phones can be very helpful) and seeing the illustration he quickly pulled out the lotion from underneath his counter. Quite a number of (Chinese) people had gathered by now to watch our interaction and everyone wanted to grab the phone and see what had solved the problem. Giggles everywhere...
Says it all doesn't it? A nice day at the beach and a chance to let the girls out to play while no one was around, or at least I thought no one was around. It wasn’t until I was applying some lotion that I could hear some noises in the trees behind me.
Ricky : “Grandma has been feeling very icky because she’s been sick for so long...Today Aunt Carolyn washed her hair, Gillian and Alexa gave her a manicure, Mom put lotion on her legs, but I get credit as the favorite grandchild because I touched Grandma’s feet and painted her toenails!”
Me : “That doesn’t make YOU the favorite! Grandma has nice feet!”
Ricky : “How come she has nice feet and yours are funny looking??”
Me : “I ask myself that same question..”
Experimenting with my new Hahnemuhle Nostalgia 190gm Sketchbook 6 x 8, dip pens with document ink, 02 preppy with document ink, watercolor and a dap of gouache. I was telling my new hairdresser, Lyn about some lotions I like, hence the subject matter.
Here are some observations:
Text on "naked" paper worked nicely with dip pen . See bottom left.
Text over wash bled with dip pen, but not preppy.
Watercolor seems to sink into the paper, does not move after put down.
"Lyn" on the left was done in gouache.
This paper is interesting, need to do more experimenting.
