An old Lorton Prison guard tower and a high tension pylon. The prison has been closed and is now an arts center. The sun was behind me with a storm approaching. #HTT #LortonGuardTower

Another angle of last week's Guard Tower pic. This one has the old power lines and the new ones next to each other . When the prison closed they put up new lines which are closer to the guard towers. They closed the prison because the land became too valuable and they want to develop it. When the lease ran out they didn't renew it. It's now a mixed use area with an arts museum and nearby houses. #Lorton #LortonArtsMuseum #sunset #landscape #LucyBurnMuseum #GuardTower #HTT #日没 #sunset #Sonnenuntergang #CoucherDuSoleil #X-T30Fujifilm

The road leading into the old Lorton prison. The quote comes from Stephen King's "The Tommyknockers."
Be well and stay safe !

Smoke stacks of an abandoned building at the old Lorton Prison. It is now closed and part of a museum and art center. This is one of the adjacent buildings. I'm non sure what or if it's being used. Thanks for your faves, comments, and views. #Lorton
A lone tree by Gasgale Gill. Haha! I had no idea what sort of tree it is from that distance, but I liked the light and lines...
Gasgale Gill flows from Coledale Hause in a steep and narrow ravine between Whiteside and Grasmoor to the Vale of Lorton...
An abandoned building at the old Lorton Prison. It closed years ago but some of the buildings remain. This is one of the adjacent buildings. I'm not sure if it's in use. The Lacy Burns Museum is located behind me. It's now an art center. The telephone pole appears to still be in use. HTT. Thanks for your views, faves, and comments. #Lorton
An imaginative and upbeat bit of artwork on display at the old Lorton prison which is now home to the Workhouse Arts Center.
It was taken on one of those days that demanded IR and nothing less. : )) IR converted Fuji X-E2 by LifePixel.com
Southbound CSX intermodal train Q173 highballs through Lorton, VA on May 7, 1995, led by GP40-2 No. 6222.
The Lorton prison, euphemistically know as "The Workhouse," has been shuttered and sold to a developer who is slowly turning this sad place into new housing, new offices, and places for children to play. Some get to play: some had to pay.
"Show me the prison
Show me the jail
Show me the prisoner
Whose life has gone stale
And I'll show you the young man
With some many reasons why
There but for fortune
Go you or I "

CSX intermodal train Q173 races south at Lorton, VA on the RF&P Subdivision on March 10, 2001 with a SD60I and a SD60M. The SD60M's and the SD60I's saw a lot of service over the former RF&P for a while after the Conrail split. They were equipped the Conrail's automatic train control, which by this time, was compatible with the RF&P. It was a period of time that I enjoyed.

A purposefully ominous shot taken at the abandoned Nike missile site in Lorton, Va just a few miles from our home. Here's what the historical marker has to say about this place:
"Located north of here was one of three Nike anti-aircraft missile complexes in Fairfax County operated by the U. S. Army and the Army National Guard between 1954 and 1974. The sites were established during the Cold War to defend Washington from Soviet air attack. This complex, along with those at Great Falls and Fairfax, was among thirteen Nike sites that surrounded Washington and Baltimore. The ring of Nike sites was reminiscent of the perimeter of forts that had protected the capital during the Civil War. This was the only Nike complex in Fairfax County containing missiles armed with nuclear warheads. It served as a model site for visits by foreign dignitaries."
Thankfully those missiles were never used.
This is a slice of the ever so slow transformation of the Lorton Reformatory into a tony, upscale, gated community. The prison, located in northern Virginia, had in its prime some 10,000 inmates serving time for crimes ranging from drug possession to multiple murders. When the prison was closed the 500 acre facility was sold off in parcels which are now being developed. Sort of ironic how a prison gets turned into a "gated community." Worse yet the developers have opted to dub the development "Liberty" and have named everything Liberty this and Liberty that. Sick sense of humor IMO. : ((
The damselfly flew straight into a spiderweb. I was briefly tempted to extricate it before I realized that it had done so intentionally and was eating the spider.
Another shot from the Lorton Farmers Market where there's all manner of great, locally grown produce. To protect their customers and veggies from the blazing Summer sun the vendors erect broad fabric canopies over their stands. Being made of somewhat translucent material these shades act just like huge softboxes which accounts for the lighting in this shot. It brought out the more subtle colors and textures and helped to give some dimensionality to these eggplants and tomatillos.
Trip to the Lorton Workhouse, which is now an art center, but you can still wander around part of the old prison buildings which are in an abandoned state.

Bit of lucky timing here. Just finished putting my camera kit into the trunk of my car when the skies opened up big time ! On the plus side we really need the rain.

Southbound Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac hotshot No. 109 (Potomac Yard-Waycross) crests the grade and passes under the classic wooden overhead bridge at Hunton, VA on Sept. 10, 1983, led by GP35 No. 133. This wooden overhead bridge was one of three left at the time this was shot, the other two being at Coleman's Mill and Lorton. This would be replaced with a modern concrete bridge within a couple years. Shortly thereafter, the one at Coleman's Mill would meet the same fate. The one at Lorton lasted into the 2000's, when it was eliminated.
