Hollow lanes were probably formed when carts moving down steep slopes broke up the surface, the debris would be washed down the hill during heavy rains, deepening the lane, the walls of which would sometimes collapse. Once hard surfacing with tarmac started to be used this process was stopped. Nevertheless, occasionally large rocks from the lane walls are loosened and fall into the road, during wet weather.

Well the comedown here was easy
Like the arrival of a new day
But a dream like this gets wasted
Without you
Under the pressure
is where we are
Under the pressure,
yea it's where we are babe
You're the only one
Like an illusion
When it all breaks down and we're runaways
Standing in the wake of our pain
And we stare straight into nothing
But we call it all the same
You were raised on a promise
Found that over time
Better come around to the new way
Or watch as it all breaks down here
Under the pressure
Well the break down here
Stole it all the way across
I wanna climb down the river
Stranded on
When you come here and I'm wasted
Lying on a field
Dancing in the rain
Hiding in the back
Loosening my grip
Wading in the water
Just trying not to crack
Under the pressure
Yeah that's where we are babe
Under the pressure
Gelukkig mogen we weer!!!
Fortunately, the restrictions are loosening and we are allowed to exercise outside again!

Weatherwise, it's been an unusual couple of weeks here in Vancouver with lower-than-usual temperatures, several rounds of heavy snow with scattered showers in-between washing away much of it, and then a windstorm which, combined with a king tide, has flooded the beaches and washed out parts of the Sea Wall around Stanley Park and smashed up the small but popular Jericho Beach Pier. Thankfully it didn't loosen and set adrift the huge barge that's still stuck on the shore in English Bay since breaking loose in November's windstorm. And today, we're back to snow. Like I say, a most unusual start to the year for us here on the normally mild and calm West Coast.

Most of the earth is covered with water, and most of that is salty and in the oceans. In fact, about 97% of Earth's water is ocean water. The remaining 3% is fresh water, and two thirds of that is frozen in glaciers. Glaciers are large masses of ice that can take many forms, from huge sheets to jagged blocks of slow-moving ice and rock. For billions of years, glaciers have carved the earth's surface and fed rivers and oceans with water. Their presence is still felt even millions of years after melting away to create valleys, lakes and even mountains.
How Glaciers Move
Glaciers are formed from the accumulation of ice and snow. But in order for this to become a glacier, it has to move under its own weight. An accumulation of ice isn't considered a glacier until it starts moving. Once it does start moving, though, it acts like a giant plow that scrapes and scours the earth. As glaciers move across the land, they loosen and pick up rocks along the way, dragging them across the earth's surface and creating striations, which are just large scratches that are formed in the direction of glacial movement.
A glacier may move in two ways. Internal flow………….read more……

Liguria is back in the Yellow Zone, which means restaurants are open during the day. It's brilliant sunshine and a glorious spring day. People stroll along the harbour quay. But the loosened freedom might cloud the view. It is not clear what will happen next and when the next lockdown will come. The uncertainty is mapped by ICM, Intentional Camera Movement.

..And suddenly you realize that in the mortal world,
Where all hopes are good,
The touch of the soul is more precious than all touches.
The soul must touch the soul
And from touch - to tremble.
Come alive, thaw out, wake up,
Loosen your vise for a moment.
Understand the fire resistance.
By touch. wide and deep.
Like fingers picking up a guitar
They gently touch the string.
Soul with soul must merge together.
In one chord, in one moan,
Never ceasing to be surprised,
Which could be simple. In unison.
The soul must have another soul
Instantly understand and accept
And learn to listen in silence
Or, more precisely, to touch ...
then (the eighth wonder of the world!)
the awakened blood will boil,
Appearing in the predawn haze,
Love is born for you!

She stood in the hush of morning, where the air carried the scent of something unfamiliar yet kind. The past lingered behind her, not as a shadow, but as a story written to its final word. There was no bitterness in its closing, no lingering sorrow, only the quiet reverence of an era laid to rest, in good terms.
Today, the air felt different, as if the world itself had shifted, making space for something else. The weight she had carried for so long had loosened, unraveling thread by thread until it no longer clung to her. There was no need to measure the distance between who she had been and who she is now. That part no longer mattered.
The road ahead stretched wide and unmarked, each step a quiet promise to herself. She did not need to know where it led - only that it was hers to walk. And as she moved forward, the light caught her in a way it never had before, as if even the sun knew.

In my secret life
I saw you this morning
You were moving so fast
Can't seem to loosen my grip
On the past
And I miss you so much
There's no one in sight
And we're still making love
In my secret life
I smile when I'm angry
I cheat and I lie
I do what I have to do....

And then it was time to turn around and head back.
18 km / 11,18 miles (roundtrip)
I will not lie.
The hike back is long and hot. Even with an early morning started at 7:30 am, we were hiking up hill, on an unshaded trail, at the hottest point of the day. Granted, there is no real altitude to deal with but the hike is still a strenuous one and it is not recommended for young children or for adults who have not put in some hiking miles before visiting. And even when you got back to the crater rim at Sierra Negra and could once again see that glorious caldera spread out in the afternoon light, our hike was not done.
We might've been wishing for the clouds and a little rain to help cool things down for the last hour back down the mountain.
On the day we completed this hike, we were fortunate to go back the same way than we had climbed. It was raining with the slick mud that we hadn't faced on the uphill climb.
***
The hike Chico Volcán is normally combined with the day hike to Sierra Negra itself. In combination, the entire combined hike took about 5-6 hours to accomplish. Make sure to carry plenty of water, a high energy snack, and sun protection, especially a hat and sunglasses as the glare of the equatorial sun on the stark landscape is harsh. And take these things even when the day looks cloudy from your start point in Puerto Villamil.
The far side of Volcán Sierra Negra experiences a completely different weather pattern that is not easily guessed from the port town. If you’ve rented rain boots for the muddy trail up Volcán Sierra Negra, pack your hiking boots for the trail down the other side.
***
The guide released us to make our way back at our own pace, so I took the opportunity to run/jog and loosen my muscles (climbing 4 volcanos in the 4 days).
It was the eighth and last volcano on that trip. There are no more climbs.
I must have reached the starting point 45 minutes before everyone else. I took a nap.
Swimming (snorkeling) and hiking will start tomorrow.
He pulled me onto his body and said to loosen up
Thought I was loose enough
Guess I'm just
Guess I'm just scared of what happens if I get used to us
Truth is, I'm useless at losing so I just
Close up
Baby, I see no use in
Choosing to do this if you don't want the same
No way
I know this ain't no game, but
I'm just a sore, sore loser all the same
We ain't on the same page
Don't know who I'm tryna kid
It'll be the same tomorrow
If I don't find a fix
I'm just lying to myself, I
Don't know who I'm tryna kid
It'll be the same tomorrow
If I don't find a fix
He told me, "You won't find closure if you won't open up"
Thought I was close enough
Guеss I'm not
Guess I'm no pro at proving what I would do for love
Truth is I'm cluelеssly foolish, so I don't
Say much
Baby, I see no use in
Choosing to do this if you don't want the same
No way
I know this ain't no game, but
I'm just a sore, sore loser all the same
So over giving
Everything I have to explain
Insistent on twisting
Every single word that I say
And I watch 'em slip away
Down my chin I feel 'em drip
Catch my feelings in a bottle
'Cause I'm still not over it
disturbing seduction
or
oblivious concern that
loosening...
holds me.

Is not about you and me. It is not about selfish asceticism either. It is about being. Being part of and responding to, life. Master Eckhart was a medieval philosopher-theologian, and it is quite illuminating what synonymous terms he used in order to describe "detachment" (abgescheidenheit and gelazenheit in the vernacular): un-forming (entbilden), un-becoming (entwerden), peeling off (abeschelen), alienate (entvremden), loosen (abeloesen) and becoming free (vri, ledic), true (luter) and naked (bloz). Letting go is hard work.
"Someone with a black coat / dark hair, and limping a little / stopped and loosened the rope. // Then walked away with the mule at slow pace."
Most of us that wear glasses have to tighten up the loosening screws at times and when you can’t find the mini screwdriver that you bought especially for that job, have to rely on the point of a sharp knives!
So three tools in this task! The knife, a tool usually for cutting or slicing. The mini screwdriver, a tool for tightening or loosening screws and finally, spectacles, a tool to aid or correct vision, as defined in the dictionary!
Barns normally deteriorate from top down as moisture creeps in broken shingles and leaky cupolas and starts an ongoing process. Often farmers years ago sought life extension for barns by using tin sheets over both the roof and siding. As tin sheets get loosened over time the underbelly of red painted wood gets revealed as it does on this barn.
On a walk we saw frogs that had started their mating ritual, with the male riding on top of the female. This 'hug' is called amplexus and can last for hours, for days, or even longer! The male frog waits for the female to lay her eggs, and at that point he fertilizes them and loosens his grip. Before this happens, the female carries the male everywhere she goes ...
I captured this pair on a walk in "Het Leen" near Eeklo, Flanders.
For my One-A-Week group: it seems we are continuing the frog theme, Jo!
Ta Prohm. The temple was built without mortar and, after it was abandoned, trees took root in the loosened stones. The trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings have made it one of the most popular temples with visitors to the area

The Circus Parade: Circuses traveled from town to town on brightly decorated trains. As a key railway centre, St. Thomas hosted more than its share of circus pageantry. Elephants, acrobats, orchestras and clowns paraded down Talbot Street to spark the imagination, lighten the heart and loosen the purse strings.

Spring is here and so are the hungry robins. The bird had to pull hard to loosen this tasty worm!
It was early spring and the grass still had its winter tan look rather than its chlorophyll green, so this is not frost.
I like lying on the grass and shooting at eye level with these iconic birds.
Have a great weekend, everyone :)
"You Should’ve Stayed Upstairs Where It Was Safe"
⠀
⠀
He was never the kind of man you wanted to find waiting in a basement. Tailored vest, loosened tie, sleeves rolled up — the picture of control wrapped around barely veiled violence.
No one really knew what the basement was for. Only that those who walked down the stairs never came back the same. Some didn’t come back at all.
⠀
To him, it was his domain. To everyone else, it was a cage.
A place where secrets were buried and loyalty was tested.
⠀
When you stepped onto the creaking stairs, leaving the open door and daylight behind, you sealed your own fate. At the bottom, he was waiting — crouched at the foot of the steps, gaze sharp and calculating, a leash dangling loosely from his hand.
⠀
⠀
And then came the words, calm enough to be more dangerous than a threat:
“You should’ve stayed upstairs where it was safe.”

The province of Nan is located in the north of Thailand and borders Laos. It is one of the lesser known provinces of Thailand, but is known for its natural beauty. Rice planting is one important agricultural activity in Thailand and it is part of the country's culture and traditions. The rice planting process in Thailand starts with preparing the soil. The farmers plow the soil to loosen it and provide it with nutrients. Then the rice seeds are planted in separate beds. After the seeds have germinated, the young rice plants are planted on the rice fields. These rice fields are usually arranged in terraces to better manage the water and ensure even irrigation. Planting rice is usually done manually, where the farmers manually put the rice plant into the ground. After planting, the fields are usually immersed in water to protect the rice plants from weeds and pests. After about 4 to 6 months, the rice is fully grown and ready to be harvested. After harvesting, the rice grains are washed and dried before being stored or sold at the market. Rice is an important source of food in Thailand and is used in many dishes from curries to fried rice dishes.
Planting rice together is an important tradition in Thailand and often seen as a social activity. This process is called "กฤษณา หรือ งานกฤษณา" in Thai and is usually performed between May and July, during the rainy season. When planting rice together, the local communities come together to plant rice together. This is not only a way to complete the rice harvest, but also an opportunity to strengthen social bonds within the community. The process of planting rice together usually starts with choosing a suitable location and preparing the soil. Then the rice is planted in separate beds. The young rice plants are then planted in the rice fields by the community participants, who usually work in rows. During the rice planting, participants are entertained with music and singing, and food and drink are often shared. This creates a festive atmosphere and contributes to strengthening community ties. It is an important tradition that is still carried on in many parts of Thailand. The above place is next to Wat Sri Mongkhon. You can walk along the bamboo bridge. The surrounding area has corn fields. making it possible to see the greenery of nature suitable for sitting and chilling. A night's sleep in the hut is also possible. The drinks here are rich in flavor. The owner is friendly. There is also a charcoal foot bath and a fish spa. Photo of a bamboo hut of Hug Na Nan Cafe next to the Wat Si Mongkol in province Nan.
The world’s largest limestone mine..In Mønsted Limestone Caves there are more than 60 kilometres of underground paths. Some are as large as cathedrals and others are so narrow that a grown man cannot walk through them upright...From late medieval times until the 1820´s no big changes took place in the caves. From a hole formed like a shaft you gained access to the limestone. A ”hewer” loosened the limestone and the ”carriers” transported the stone to the field above.
The ”hewer” used the loosened limestone as a platform and so the tunnel often reached a height of several meters. Only big limestones were removed. Limestone debris and flints were left as a growing heap on the floor of the tunnel. As time passed, the carriers had to stoop in a narrow tunnel surrounded by heaps of flints.
As winter's icy grip begins to loosen, and the days stretch ever so slightly longer, there is a palpable sense of anticipation that hangs in the air.

The End of the World - Apparently the end of the world has its sights set on Sedona. This beautiful location is high over Sedona and looks down on the red rocks. The view is so vast it is hard to capture in an image. It is an extremely popular spot it was hard to find a spot to myself. I am actually surprised so many people drive this far out to camp. The drive can be done in a passenger car but it is a very long dusty road and parts are very bumpy (enough to loosen the bolts in your car haha). I hiked up to the tower (which is closed due to COVID) but I wasn’t impressed with the view there because the trees block most of your view. The cliff edges down lower are better but packed with people. Unfortunately it had been so dry and with the fires the air isn’t as clear as it should be. There is a trail I may try that starts down by Sedona and come up here. It is a few miles long and I bet it is a beautiful hike although a steep one. If I remember correctly it rises over 2000 feet in just a few miles. Anyway I hope you enjoy.
At the end of time—where the hours no longer dared to move and the wind had forgotten its own name—a lone tree stood rooted in the sands of eternity. He held each leaf as if it were his last memory, his last whisper of color, his last proof that he had once been alive.
Night settled over the desert like a great, listening silence. No creatures stirred. No shadows shifted. Even the dunes seemed to hold their breath.
Then, with a sigh too soft for any world to hear, the final leaf loosened its grip and drifted away. The tree felt it go—not as pain, but as a quiet unthreading of everything he had ever been. Now only his silhouette remained, carved against the darkness. He had no tears left to shed; there was not enough moisture in all the desert to carry even a single drop of sorrow.
He believed this was the end.
But the universe had other plans.
Without warning, the sky split open—not with thunder, but with light. Countless stars poured through the darkness like a river of fireflies returning home. They shimmered, gathered, and circled above him in a constellation that pulsed like a heartbeat.
One by one, the stars began to speak.
“You have never been alone.”
Their voices were soft, ancient, and warm—like the memory of a lullaby sung before the first dawn.
“You will return home to us.”
The tree felt something stir deep within his bark, something older than roots, older than deserts, older than time itself.
“And when you arrive,” the stars promised, “you will shine brightly once again.”
The tree lifted his branches—not in despair, but in recognition. For the first time in ages, he understood: he had not been abandoned to the sands. He had been waiting. Transforming. Becoming.
And above him, the stars waited too—ready to welcome him back into the light he had forgotten he carried.

A bitter cold winter day has caused a rail break on the Wisconsin Central main line entering Shops Yard near the Subway Road grade crossing at North Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, on December 11, 1994. This particular break is called a “pull apart,” where the rail contracted enough to shear off the track bolts at a rail joint. A kerosene-soaked rope is placed alongside the offending rail and lit, creating enough heat for the rail to expand closing up the joint, and allowing the holes to once again line up and new bolts installed. A WC trackman uses a spike maul to help loosen the warming rail on the tie plates, allowing it to slide more freely. Meanwhile, WC train 2 approaches in the distance, but will have to wait until the job is done before entering Shops Yard.
This photo uses contrast to make its point. Sharpness contrast, the unmoving ice-encrusted rock vs the liquid flow of a rushing river; colour contrast, the icy blues of reflected sky vs the warmer highlights on the water surface. I never get tired of looking for interesting photos of ice forming in early winter - or in this case, mid-winter, following a chinook wind that warmed the prairie for a few days and loosened that season's icy grip. Winter did return with a vengeance, allowing me to photograph a second freeze-up. This was last winter. Right now, it's happening again, and if my imagination doesn't fail me there will be more ice shots to come over the next couple of months.

How I spend my day time
Loosen up the frown,
Make them feel alive
Oh, make it fast and greasy
I'm numb and way too easy
You're gone and I gotta stay
High all the time
To keep you off my mind.

There’s a nice story to this one…..
I had just returned from a walk and my wife informed me this rapscallion had installed himself inside the bird feeder about 10 minutes earlier..
“They are squirrel proof: said I, ridiculously
“Not any more, Sherlock” said Julie.
I had my little camera and thought if I went and took a photo of him he would scarper, and he did, sort of, only he was fatter than when he went in and he thrust himself out through one of those little squares and got stuck, front legs, head and chest out, the rest in. We walked away and left him for 5 minutes thinking he would free himself. He didn’t he was well and truly stuck and it wasn’t doing him any good.
We decided we had to try and cut him out. There’s no way old Magoo could do the cutting, not if Mr Squirrel were to escape in one piece, so I gallantly suggested as a precaution that Julie should wear some kevlar gloves, and as she carefully tried to get the cutters to the wire Magoo bravely hid round the back and held the cage steady. It wasn’t easy, the plump little fellow was filling the square totally, and squirming in panic. She managed to cut one wire and was just manoeuvring the cutters to the wire on the other side when, quicker than a hiccup the little rascal shot his head forward and latched on to her finger with those nut crushing teeth……
The gloves held…..slowly Julie began to draw her hand back as she did so it pulled the fat little interloper through the now loosened hole until a seeming sucking motion drew his legs and tail free, at the same time he released his finger bite and fell to the ground with a resounding plop, and then ran off like a … .well, like a mad squirrel!!
I have referred to the scoundrel throughout as ‘he’ for seriously, no woman could be that stupid, and while the feeder failed to live up to its lofty claims, fortunately, the kevlar gloves took it in their stride.
