SCOUT: “What are we doing by the front door, Paddy?”
PADDY: “Daddy want to take a photograph of us in silhouette, Scout.”
SCOUT: “Why? I’d much rather go and play hide-and-seek in the garden. Wouldn’t you, Paddy?”
PADDY: “Yes I would, but first we must pose for him like he asks us. Then we can go and play.”
SCOUT: “Oh goody!”
PADDY: “Daddy says that when he sees my silhouette that I look like Alfred Hitchcock.”
SCOUT: *Scratches head with paw.* “Who is Alfred Hitchcock?”
PADDY: “A famous English film director.”
SCOUT: “And what does your silhouette have to do with Alfred Hitchcock?”
PADDY: “I don’t know.” *Shrugs.* “What I do know is that he directed a film called ‘The Birds’, so maybe he could direct a film about us called, ‘The Bears’.”
The theme for “Looking Close on Friday” for the 4th of March is “silhouette”. I don’t know if you can see the resemblance between Alfred Hitchcock and my Paddington Bear, but I certainly can! I thought my bears in silhouette against the antique pyramid glass of my front door would be perfect for the theme. I hope that you think so too, and that it makes you smile!
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Made by the jewellers W. Wright Ltd (est. 1848), this button is part of a set of six of what are known as “Bachelor Buttons”. Bachelor Buttons usually featured ladies in some form, either allegorical figures, or (as in this case) real women. Made circa 1905, this waistcoat button features the famous Edwardian actress Camille Clifford (1885 - 1971). Each button was made by taking a lithograph of a photograph of the actress, painting it my hand, and once dry then coating the image in celluloid to protect the image. The protected image was then inserted into a 9 carat gold frame and backing. It is placed against a bolt of figured pink and blue satin.
The theme for “Looking Close on Friday” for the 12th of November is “buttons”. This was an easy theme for me, as I collect antique, vintage and interesting buttons. The only difficulty for me was choosing which one I wanted to feature. Originally I was going to do a collage of buttons, but then I decided to focus just on this one very special bachelor button from my set of six. I hope that you like my choice, and that it makes you smile!

The Looking close … on Friday group has chosen Things with teeth this week.
The Orange Faerie has invited her friend the Orange Princess for luncheon at her castle by the sea. With a wave of her wand, the Orange faerie produces a feast fit for a princess on the empty table before them: orange lobsters with orange carrots followed by orange pineapples and of course fresh oranges. Best of all there is orange flavoured ice cream to finish with. All this is accompanied by freshy squeezed orange juice to drink. What a fine repast produced by the kind Orange Faerie! Bon appétit!
The theme for “Looking Close… on Friday” is “orange”. Two of the wonderful things that attract people, young and old alike, to Playmobil are their vibrant colours and the array of different items that are produced. I thought this tableaux featuring a range of orange items really suited the theme. I hope you think so too!
Playmobil is a line of toys produced by the Brandstätter Group, headquartered in Zirndorf, Germany. Production began in 1974. Playmobil began to be sold worldwide in 1975, and by 2009, approximately 2.2 billion Playmobil figures had been sold. The signature Playmobil toy is a 7.5 cm tall human figure with a particular smiling face. A wide range of accessories, buildings and vehicles, as well as many sorts of animals, are also part of the Playmobil line. Playmobil toys are produced in themed series of sets as well as individual special figures and playsets. New products and product lines developed by a 50-strong development team are introduced frequently, and older sets are discontinued. Promotional and one-off products are sometimes produced in very limited quantities. These practices have helped give rise to a sizeable community of collectors.

For many years, I used an atelier to make me beautiful clothes with whom I developed an amazing bond. She understood me, knew my likes and dislikes, was creative and could bring my designs to life, since I have aptitude for the designing of clothes, but not for the sewing of them. Imagine my horror when she moved, first to Sydney, which we could manage, and then to Berlin! Even the deepest pockets couldn’t justify the price of flying to Berlin for multiple consultations and fittings! I never thought I would find another, that is until I was introduced to Kathryn, who altered an evening dress for the daughter of a friend of mine and made a silk purse from a sow’s ear. After meeting Kathryn I found her to be the perfect new atelier for me. She is friendly, an excellent sewer, consultative and very willing to try new ideas, be dynamic and work with some tough fabrics! What more could I ask for from an atelier?
The theme for “Looking Close on Friday” for the 4th of February is “clothing labels”. This label from my atelier, Kathryn Ellard, seemed the perfect choice. Sewn inside a jacket I had made for a wedding three years ago, the label is luxurious and features a nice vignette of Art Nouveau swirls, which for anyone who follows me will know is perfect, as I love Art Nouveau design. I hope you like my choice for the theme, and that it makes you smile.

The theme for the 18th of December “Looking Close… on Friday” is “one single candle”. Lighting candles at Christmastime is special for me, not only because it casts a beautiful warm glow, but also because we have a European tradition in our family that when we light a candle on Christmas Eve, we remember those who are no longer here. Then, because they are alive in my heart, they are with me to celebrate my most favourite time of the year.
As this is the last “Looking Close… on Friday” before Christmas, I should just like to wish everyone in the group a very happy Festive Season. It may be a different one this year, and there may be more people to remember in our hearts, but may it be filled with happiness and joy for you all.
For Christians, a candle is lit at Christmastime to represent the Star of Bethlehem, guiding the Magi to the stable where Jesus was born. For those of Jewish faith, a menorah in the window is a Jewish custom symbolising the miracle of Chanukah (when a single jug of oil burnt for eight days).

For this week‘s theme I was in despair with winter saying hello and no flowers in the garden. Then remembered my potted ones (pass them daily yet totally out of my brain) and got me some (they are on the verge of perishing already). Wasn‘t sure whether a single one would suffice then played with contrasting colours using my deep blue vase and one yellow single flower. The effect looks almost artificial (no ai used!). I had another single flower and a shot with mostly calmer white tones yet decided for the bright coloured one. Hope you like - HLCoF!!!

The theme for “Looking Close on Friday” for the 26th of November is “lips”. In recent months, I have been exploring a new avenue in my creativity, that of portraiture photography. I used my sitter for the “Smile on Saturday” theme of “nose” a little over two months ago and again a little over a month ago for “Looking Close on Friday’s” theme of “dots and stripes”. My elusive sitter has agreed to return for a third time, and has kindly shirked his usual garb of a smart suit and tie in exchange for a tulle ruff. When combined with a special plaster mask layered with torn paper given to me as a gift by an artist friend who made it especially for me, I think they give my shot something of a commedia dell'arte feel. In keeping with the Italian feel, I have given my photo the title of “Baciami”, which I am told is Italian for “kiss me”! I think he has a rather lovely set of lips which are quite kissable, don’t you? I do hope that you like my choice of this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile!
