Port Jefferson is a beautiful, historic town located on the North Shore of Long Island where the smell of salt in the air and the sound of the Long Island Ferry is never too far in the distance. This waterfront town was settled in the 1600s as a rural town, but transitioned into a shipbuilding center in the 1800s.

Many of the historic buildings and homes still standing in Port Jefferson belonged to prominent sailors and shipbuilders in the area. Visitors to the town can still take in a slice of history at buildings like the Village Center. The Village Center was formerly a shipyard, where builders worked tirelessly to create and immediately launch ships into the Long Island Sound.

Today, Port Jefferson is widely known as a popular tourist spot in Suffolk County, as well as a transport hub thanks to the Bridgeport and Port Jefferson Steamboat Company, which takes hundreds of passengers to and from Connecticut each day. Port Jeff is busiest in the summer, but it also draws many tourists for unique events like the Charles Dickens Festival, which is held every December.

The pigs, that is. Judging by the small size of this fenced area, I am assuming it was once used as a pig pen.

Smell that? That's pig slop. I love the smell of pig slop in the morning. ;)

Beginning a short series on shorebirds away from the sea shore with some winter residents at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. This pair of long-billed dowitchers were probing the shallow waters of one of the flooded fields for aquatic invertebrates. This area is near the northern limit of their winter range.

Nikkor AF 50mm f1.4 D was the lens I bought as a everyday lens for my old D600 SLR.. Autofocus was done by camera. Nikon Z line of cameras lost this ability so no AF for 50mm f1.4 D anymore.

It is based on and continuation of line of AI Nikkor fifties and share wit them optical design and aperture ring on camera. So, it is very capable MF lens when used with Zf.

Photo taken at Sweetwater Wetlands Park. The Latin name is Limnodromus scolopaceus, which is even longer than its bill.

The long-billed dowitcher spends the winter here in Florida (and farther south) and the summer on the Arctic Ocean coastal plain.

Wikipedia: The crab-eating macaque (Macaca fascicularis), also known as the long-tailed macaque or cynomolgus macaque, is a cercopithecine primate native to Southeast Asia. As a synanthropic species, the crab-eating macaque thrives near human settlements and in secondary forest. They have been described as a species on the edge, living on the edge of forests, rivers, and seas, at the edge of human settlements, and maybe on the edge of population decline.

Crab-eating macaques are omnivorous and frugivorous. They live in matrilineal groups ranging from 10 to 85 individuals, with groups exhibiting female philopatry and males emigrating from natal group at puberty. Crab eating macaques are the only old-world monkey known to use stone tools in their daily foraging and they engage in a robbing and bartering behavior in some tourist locations.

Conservation status: Endangered

(A quick note: The status of this monkey has worsened since my last post of them from 2021.)

The long-tailed tit is a small, fluffy bird with a distinctive, long tail that's longer than its body. It's characterized by a white head with a black eyestripe, a black and white back, and pinkish underparts, though juveniles lack the pink. They are known for their social nature, often seen in small, active family groups, and their constant chatter while foraging

The Long-tailed Sylph (Aglaiocercus kingii) is a breathtaking sight in the cloud forests of Cañon del Combeima, Tolima, Colombia. This photograph captures a striking male, its iridescent emerald green plumage and remarkably long tail feathers standing out against the lush backdrop. Shot at an altitude of 2627 meters, the image benefits from the soft, diffused light typical of the cloud forest, enhancing the bird's vibrant colors. The composition focuses on the Sylph's delicate balance on a flowering plant, highlighting the grace and beauty of this unique hummingbird.

As a bird photographer dedicated to conservation, capturing this moment was both a challenge and a privilege. The long tail feathers required careful framing to ensure they were fully showcased, and the ever-changing light conditions demanded precise camera settings. This image is a testament to the patience and dedication needed to photograph such elusive and magnificent creatures. Sharing this moment allows for a deeper appreciation of both the technical aspects of wildlife photography and the critical importance of conserving these natural habitats.

Judging by the worn condition of this monarch, I'm guessing it was a returnee from spending the winter in Mexico. Not far away from this guy there was what looked like a new generation monarch feeding at the same time.

From the monarch migration tracking web site, it looks like we do have overlapping generations in this area during the spring migration: journeynorth.org/monarchs/news/spring-2020/04302020-eggs-...

Last in my miniseries of shots from a couple of hours we spent at Bird Island Basin in Mustang Island State Park, Texas.

We've visited that spot several times over the years and have spotted Long-billed Curlews every time.

I posted three Long-eared Owl images this evening.

This is a lifer and one I have wanted to photograph for many years. As well as this nestling, I posted two shots of the adult one of which shows the behavior of elongating their body.

If you look at the adult shots, you can see that something is wrong with her right eye. The left eye pupil contracted in relation to the light. but her right eye pupil remained dilated and fixed with some of the pupil crossing the boundary of the iris at the bottom.

Richard Chamberland who provided me with this opportunity told me he has seen this condition in a few Owls of different species and thinks it is an injury caused by a poke on a twig. It doesn't seem to impair their ability to fly or hunt. These Long-eared Owls are raising four and at least two are at the branching stage.
