I’ve brought home many of these plants over the years and usually end up throwing them in the trash when they stop blooming. But this time, I did a little research on YouTube that brought forth information on how to bring one of these plants back to life. I tried the suggestions and here is the result.

We have two large hydrangea bushes in our front yard, and they have been profuse, long-lasting bloomers in the past. This summer, only one massive flower head like this one from last year emerged! Others in the neighborhood also had very low production on hydrangeas this summer!

Vanda, abbreviated in the horticultural trade as V. is a genus in the orchid family, Orchidaceae. There are about 87 species, and the genus is commonly cultivated for the marketplace. This genus and its allies are considered to be among the most specifically adapted of all orchids within the Orchidaceae. The genus is highly prized in horticulture for its showy, fragrant, long-lasting, and intensely colorful flowers. Vanda species are widespread across East Asia, Southeast Asia, and New Guinea, with a few species extending into Queensland and some of the islands of the western Pacific

moth orchid, (genus Phalaenopsis), genus of about 60 species of orchids (family Orchidaceae), native to southeastern Asia and part of Australia. Some species are cultivated for the commercial flower trade and are crossed to produce hybrids with beautiful white, purple, and pink flowers. Many of the horticultural species and hybrids are fairly easy to grow and are popular houseplants.

Moth orchids have a short stem that bears several broad leathery leaves. Most species are epiphytic, with thick roots, and do not require soil to survive; potted plants are commonly sold loosely rooted with wood chips. The flower spike arises from the base of the plant and has one to several long-lasting flowers. The flowers consist of two lateral petals, a central modified petal known as a labellum (lip), a column that houses the reproductive structures, and three petal-like sepals. The flowers of some species turn green after pollination. Cultivated plants require regular moisture and fertilizer and generally bloom once a year.

Nothing says tropical quite like the bird of paradise. With its large, coarse-textured leaves and long-lasting blooms, bird of paradise plants find themselves at home in any tropical garden. The complex blooms not only look like tropical birds, but also rely on birds for pollination! They last for quite a long time and make fantastic cut flowers.

The advantages of turf roofs (also called sod roofs) are many. They are very heavy, so they help to stabilize the house; they provide good insulation; and they are long-lasting.

Turf roofs in Norway are a tradition and you will see them everywhere. Roofs in Scandinavia have probably been covered with birch bark and sod since prehistory. During the Viking and Middle Ages most houses had sod roofs. In rural areas sod roofs were almost universal until the beginning of the 18th century. Tile roofs, which appeared much earlier in towns and on rural manors, gradually superseded sod roofs except in remote inland areas during the 19th century. Corrugated iron and other industrial materials also became a threat to ancient traditions. But just before extinction, the national romantics proclaimed a revival of vernacular traditions, including sod roofs. A new market was opened by the demand for mountain lodges and holiday homes. At the same time, open air museums and the preservation movement created a reservation for ancient building traditions. From these

macro mondays - Monday, June 27: Bubbles

To create longer lasting bubbles I used a small amount of food colouring with a few drops of washing up liquid added, do not add extra water. Put both ingredients into a small tumbler glass, use a drinking straw to make the bubbles up to the top of the glass, then scoop them out with a spoon. The bubbles are robust enough to stay on the spoon for up to 20 minutes or longer depending on the mix. Time enough to play around with different backgrounds and lighting.

I've used a blue food colouring here and then dropped more colour from a drinking straw into the folds for definition, that's how robust the bubbles are!

Have fun :))

A visit to see bluebells in woodland always brings long-lasting memories of spring to me. The fresh green of the new beech leaves and the stunning blue carpet of flowers harmonize so well.

Also a chance to escape the city life and see my close friend in the countryside.

These tulips have petals which are topped with fringes that look like the frayed edge of a piece of satin fabric. Some garden centres may carry only two or three varieties of Fringed Tulips, but they are gradually becoming more popular, not only because the flowers look so elegant, but also because the blooms are quite long-lasting. A daylily is a flowering plant in the genus Hemerocallis, a member of the family Asphodelaceae, subfamily Hemerocallidoideae. Despite the common name, it is not in fact a lily. Gardening enthusiasts and horticulturists have long bred daylily species for their attractive flowers. Thousands of cultivars have been registered by local and international Hemerocallis societies. Daylilies are perennial plants, whose name alludes to its flowers, which typically last about a day. (Wikipedia)

I love the scent of Spring. I love it enough to suffer the cold and dark of winter for it - and winter here in the Northern part of our world seems to last far too long.

The Next Global Depression Is coming and Optimism Won’t Slow It Down.

The world is confused and frightened. COVID-19 infections are on the rise across the U.S. and around the world, even in countries that once thought they had contained the virus.

Let’s start with the word depression. There is no commonly accepted definition of the term. That’s not surprising, given how rarely we experience catastrophes of this magnitude. But there are three factors that separate a true economic depression from a mere recession. First, the impact is global. Second, it cuts deeper into livelihoods than any recession we’ve faced in our lifetimes. Third, its bad effects will linger longer.

A depression is not a period of uninterrupted economic contraction. There can be periods of temporary progress within it that create the appearance of recovery. The Great Depression of the 1930s began with the stock-market crash of October 1929 and continued into the early 1940s, when World War II created the basis for new growth. That period included two separate economic drops: first from 1929 to 1933, and then again from May 1937 into 1938. As in the 1930s, we’re likely to see moments of expansion in this period of depression.

Depressions don’t just generate ugly stats and send buyers and sellers into hibernation. They change the way we live. The Great Recession created very little lasting change. Some elected leaders around the world now speak more often about wealth inequality, but few have done much to address it. Large segments of society, particularly people who weren’t already on the verge of retirement, were able to hunker down and later return to the same approach to saving and investing they practiced before the crisis. They were rewarded with a period of solid, long-lasting recovery. That’s very different from the current crisis. COVID-19 fears will bring lasting changes to public attitudes toward all activities that involve crowds of people and how we work on a daily basis

Even with all this Knowledge we have to carry on and keep thinking positive. We have to stay strong and stick together. This depression wasn`t the first and won`t be the last.

Poppy buds ... Selective focus with and edited mystical look and a matte finish ... These poppy buds captured in the garden of St Paul's Church, Covent Garden-London.

St Paul’s Church is the parish church of Covent Garden. Built in 1633 the church is also known as ‘The Actor’s Church’ due to their long lasting relationship with the theatre community.

Grevillea superb.

I placed rocks around it and am happy to see it return yearly.

A mat-forming species of Dianthus well-suited for use as a small-scale groundcover. Blooms over a long period, the cheery flowers are resting atop a bed of deep green, needle-like foliage. Good soil drainage, year-round, is essential.

Uses

Perfectly sized for rock gardens and border fronts. Cut flowers are long-lasting in fresh bouquets. Perfect for all kinds of containers.

We had the most amazing weather and light yesterday while driving home from Edinburgh. The air was crisp and cold, the fields and trees were wearing a silver sprinkle of frost and the sky gave us a lovely, long lasting sunset to go with the seasonal change. What a wonderful day to travel :)

#Soap

Please press "Z".

From the day I'd first seen a soap bubble planet (if I remember correctly, it even was a photo I saw in the MM pool for our previous "Soap" theme), I knew I wanted to give it a try myself. No sooner said than done :) I've already tried to photograph frozen bubbles, so I was aware of the fact that it's a little tricky to get the right soap/water solution to make a bubble as stable and long lasting as possible. It took me a while to find the right setup for the bubble and the best camera settings, but once I'd figured it out it was such fun – pretty messy fun, I should add –, and in the end I picked four images out of literally hundreds, and I still found it hard to choose only one photo.

Here are the links to two very useful tutorials where you can find great tips regarding the creation of stable bubbles, interesting bubble patterns and also camera settings:

STRG/CTRL+ www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGu-LekEHsw

STRG/CTRL+ www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-j2t-lAhno

Manual settings work best for this, because the surface of the bubble will be in constant motion, so you'll need a very fast shutter speed to get a sharp image (and don't forget about the ISO settings, higher ISO helps tremendously! Why I am mentioning this? Because I almost always forget about the ISO settings, something I should definitely change). I've created my amazingly long lasting bubble inside the base of an eggcup (4,5 cm / 1,77 inches in diameter). If you blow at the bubble (with the straw you've used for creating the the bubble) ever so carefully, the most beautiful patterns and swirls will appear. So let the fun begin :)

Calandiva is a member of the Kalanchoe family. It has glossy, succulent-type leaves and an abundance of double, rose-like, long lasting flowers in an attractive range of colours. Calandivas are easy to care for and make wonderful gifts for newbie plant parents.

I'm not sure what might be happening with atmospherics at the moment but we have been getting some wonderful and long lasting sunsets here in Mount Gambier. Last night's was another vivid beauty. This shot was taken almost an hour after the sun went below the horizon. The stars were well and truly shining overhead. I was amazed at the vivid hues it still gave even another half an hour after this was taken. I think even the birds perched on our village TV antenna were mesmerised!

Ascocenda, abbreviated as Ascda in the horticultural trade, was a man-made hybrid orchid genus resulting from a cross between the former genus Ascocentrum and Vanda (Asctm × V). Ascocentrum is now synonymous with Vanda, so the name is obsolete. Hybrids in the nothogenus × Ascocenda are now properly termed Vanda. × Ascocenda hybrids are common in cultivation with numerous cultivars and often combine the large flower size of the Vanda parents with the color and compactness of the Ascocentrum parents. They are evergreen compact epiphytes with upright, narrow, oviform leaves. The inflorescence is an axillary cluster with 6 to 8 open flowers. They bloom twice or sometimes three times a year with long lasting flowers. The flowers are brightly colored, often overlaid with contrasting colors. 31455

SPATHIPHYLLUM WALLISII

Nomenclature

Family : Araceae (Aroids)

Botanical name: Spathiphyllum wallisii hybrid “Sensation”

Common name : White sails

Uses

Occasionally used as a small specimen plant but more commonly found in single or

mixed displays, or as under planting to larger species. It is suitable for use around

swimming pools..

Description

A vigorous plant with large, glossy, oblong-laceolate leaves. Their deep green colour

contrasts sharply with the pure white, arum-like flowers which are borne on slender

stems. Each flower may grow up to fifteen centimetres long, contains a creamy-white,

maize-like spadix and turns green with age.

History

Spathiphyllum wallisii is one of thirty six species in a genus of tropical evergreens. It

was discovered in the late nineteenth century growing wild in Central America. The

species has been improved by the larger hybrids “Mauna Loa”, named after Hawaiian

volcano, and the even larger “Sensation”, which are both popular indoor plants.

These elegant ariods produce striking, long-lasting white flowers, giving the plant its

common name of Peace lily or White sails. Scientific names are also often based on

an association of ideas. The botanist who named this plant obviously thought that its

white flower spathe looked like a leaf-hence, in Greek, Spathiphyllum.

Anthurium is a genus of about 1000 species of flowering plants, the largest genus of the arum family, Araceae. General common names include anthurium, tailflower, flamingo flower, and laceleaf. The genus is native to the Americas, where it is distributed from northern Mexico to northern Argentina and parts of the Caribbean. They are grown for their attractive flowering bracts which are popular with the cut flower trade. All parts of the plant, are poisonous. If ingested, may cause mild stomach disorders. 19484

Lagerstroemia commonly known as crape myrtle (incorrectly or less commonly spelled crepe myrtle, and often referred to in technical literature as crapemyrtle), is a genus of around 50 species of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs native to the Indian subcontinent, southeast Asia, northern Australia, and parts of Oceania, cultivated in warmer climates around the world. It is a member of the family Lythraceae, which are also known as the loosestrife family. Crape myrtles are chiefly known for their colorful and long-lasting flowers which occur in summer. Most species of Lagerstroemia have sinewy, fluted stems and branches with a mottled appearance that arises from having bark that sheds throughout the year. Flowers are borne in summer and autumn in panicles of crinkled flowers with a crepe-like texture. Colors vary from deep purple to red to white, with almost every shade in between. 49513

"TRY TO BE A RAINBOW IN SOMEONE'S CLOUD"

Was it worth it?

We sat in the car for 3.5hrs while the rain lashed down and no sign could be seen of anything that looked like a break in the flat grey sky.

I felt sure that sometimes after stormy conditions, the sky takes on a dramatic feel.

When finally the rain eased but still the sky was nothing too great.

The temperature had dropped and even though we were well wrapped up, I began to feel the cold after a short while. I'd captured a few images but certainly not what I'd hoped for.

Then just as we'd headed back towards the car, the light changed, the clouds took on a great depth and it started to kick off. Ken spotted this rainbow but scared I'd miss it, I pointed the handheld camera at the nearest subject (sheep)

Well the rainbow continued to last and last, in fact there were two at one point.

I said to Ken, "I'm off to the Drinking dinosaur" as he lent against the car, thinking we were off.

The Benny Hill moment struck, you know the one, where you run as fast as your legs will carry you.

In my case "not very fast" praying that long lasting rainbow will stretch, just a little longer.

Finally I made it, Ken thought CPR might be in order lol!

I clicked away, hoping my quickly adjusted settings would be ok, with the newly acquired 5d. In the panic, the tripod had been left packed in the car and Ken being the wonderful husband he is ran back to get it for me.

Sadly all too late, as he cursed on his return

I just prayed the images I'd captured would be ok.

After all, it had been the best sky of the week. One in all honesty, I should have been better prepared for.

It gave us both a laugh afterwards, although we both ached that night

Almost forgot, if you look carefully there are some seals visible on the beach below. On one of the sunrise mornings we did, there must have been over 100 at one point
