17 Mile Drive

Monterey Peninsula

California

Happy Tree Tuesday! I hope this iconic tree will survive many, many years. The crumbling cliffs have been shored up with rock walls, and I suspect the root system has been compromised. But the Lone Cypress has been a feature of the 17 Mile Drive for decades.

Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for your kind comments, awards and faves -- I appreciate them all. Take care and stay safe!

Incognito! The mysterious painter!

It all starts with a blank canvas!

Sunset is lighting up the Lone Cypress on California's Monterey Peninsula during our visit. I have rendered this photograph as if it was an oil painting.

Wish i was there right now.

In case you don't know him (he's possibly the most photographed tree in California) he's on the right.

I never thought he was too much of a "lone cypress" since he does have some friends out on his rock as you can see.

Famous tree on 17 Mile Drive, Pebble Beach Golf Course, California

17-Mile Drive is a scenic road through Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove on the Monterey Peninsula in California. One of the most scenic drives in the world as you meet the inspiring Lone Cypress. The Lone Cypress is a Monterey cypress tree located in Pebble Beach. Standing atop a granite headland overlooking Carmel Bay, the tree has become a Western icon and has been called one of the most photographed trees in North America. Also, this iconic tree is used as the logo for Pebble Beach Resorts since it starts in 1919. The location is a famous sunset point for hundreds of visitors waiting in the evening.

Where would any collection of my wanderings be without at least one shot of "The Most Photographed Tree in the World", the Lone Cypress along the 17-mile drive between Monterey and Carmel, California.

When I close my eyes, you are on my mind

I don't seem to get tired of clicking this tree:)

Finally got to see the Lone Cypress in Pebble Beach which I have been anticipating. Too bad the sky just wanted to be completely blue. Maybe next time. Nor-Cal is got to be my favorite place to run around with a camera in hand. :-)

This image was taken in Pebble Beach CA during a dry lightening storm on the Monterey Peninsula. After an hour of shooting with mixed results, I was ready to pack up and head home. "Just one more shot." I said to myself. This was the shot.

Not a composite. No Photoshop. Edits in Lightroom to crop, adjust exposure, dodge/burn, and adjust color.

He's half the tree he used to be

The storms they finally took their toll

A quarter century perched on the rock

Alone but stalwart, braving wind and sea

If trees have souls, and I'm sure they do

Ancient wisdom flows through branch and bark

Charting the history of natural stamina

Showing humankind the truth of beauty too

The tree, he's just like you and I

Surrounded by others, yet standing alone

Whittled away by time and tide

Erect e'en if disabled, reaching toward sky

That 'Ol Lone Cypress has much to impart

And I will listen to his natural wisdom

That 'Ol Lone Cypress, stoic, sturdy, yet brittle

Breathes with life, alongside my heart

Lone Cyprus in Monterey. I edited like this on purpose to give it a painted look.

Wiki

The Lone Cypress is a Monterey cypress tree in Pebble Beach, California. Standing on a granite hillside off the 17-Mile Drive, the tree is a Western icon, and has been called one of the most photographed trees in North America. It is located between Cypress Point Golf Course and the Pebble Beach Golf Links, two of world's best-known golf courses. Possibly as old as 250 years, the cypress has been scarred by fire and has been held in place with cables for 65 years.

The Monterey cypress grows naturally only in Pebble Beach and Point Lobos.[1]

A drawing of the tree was registered as Pebble Beach Company's trademark in 1919. The company said the trademark protected not only the logo but also the tree itself.

the lone cypress has a few friends on its peninsula, its a trick of composition that shows it to be alone against the world :)

The Lone Cypress basks in the moodiness of a coastal morning on the 17-Mile drive along the Monterey Coastline. This iconic tree is thought to be 250 years old. It is reputed to be one of the most photographed trees in the world. Believe it or not.

For my dear freind Laura who was wonderfully kind enough to lend my brother and I her empty house in Pebble Beach. This cypress will only be around for about another 50 years or less, so thought I'd get it before it's gone.

My brother and I are on a "photo safari" these weeks. When we are done I will be getting back to all of you.

This iconic tree is located on the 17-mile drive in Pebble Beach, California. It is a Monterey Cypress, that grows naturally only in Pebble Beach and Point Lobos. It is one of those pictures that is a must-take as you travel around the 17-mile drive.

Proven by this photo, the lone cypress, the most photographed tree at the US pacific coast, is not as alone as people think it is.

Sorry for hiding the famous tree behind other cypresses, but I don't want to break trademarks.

Pebble Beach's crown tourist attraction, the "Lone Cypress" tree is among one of the most photographed trees on the planet.

It's out at the end of the bluff, and there are "sister trees" close by. Usually photographers attempt to capture her "alone" on the end of that bluff.

I did so as well when I visited Carmel and Pebble Beach and drove along the 17 mile drive attempting to take as many sunset photos as possible until it got completely dark.

The Lone Cypress Tree turnout was the second one I encountered on the drive.

Here is a shot from the viewing platform. I took the 3 exposures on April 30, 2018. The image was processed 02-08-21.

This is the famous Lone Cypress at Pebble Beach and 17 Mile Drive in Monterey Bay, CA. The 250 year old Lone Cypress has been scarred by fire and held in place with cables for 65 years. A rock wall helps hold up the soil and roots so it continues to grow. A real testament to overcoming adversity against all odds, with help. Build your foundation on rock, not sand.

This was taken shortly before sunset, in wonderful light. The day before I took roughly the same shot in fog and stormy weather. I like them equally.

After weeks of foggy/cloudy nights a clear sky finally showed itself. The Lone Cypress in Pebble Beach, CA with the Milky Way behind.

Unfortunately, the original photo had one of those grey, bleak skies lacking total detail. So this composite blends in clouds and sky from San Joaquin Valley, California.
