For the last few weeks that I have been in Camden I have seen this little place being put together. Today I walked passed and saw their brand new sign and could not help myself but stop and admire it.

I did not have a chance to eat here but stumbled by while wandering about town. Aren't they handsome? The seafood in the case looked even more delicious.

I must return. For dinner, that is.

Blog entry

The chef is mid-scroll, the maître d’ is mid-drag — both deep in contemplation outside Joe Allen’s on Burleigh Street. It’s the quiet communion of hospitality: one in Crocs, one in cuffs, both on the brink of the next rush. A momentary breather between table service and ticket time.

After picking up my camera from the repair shop in Tottenham Court Road yesterday, I needed a) a coffee and b) a pee (as you do). I spotted a restaurant with tables outside, in a side street, went in & asked if I could just have a coffee without a whole meal. I was ushered in with great gusto by the maître d', who introduced me to the roof garden (I'm an outdoor sort of girl).

Considering I only wanted a coffee, the customer relations were excellent! So was the coffee. And the toilets were impressive!

I managed to take just one photo - although I would have taken more - before the battery went flat in my camera. Grr.

Discovered later that this is quite a high profile Greek place!

I took this photo, shortly after 2am on December 31, 2012, from Croom's Hill, beside Greenwich Park, looking towards the junction with Burney Street, to the left, Nevada Street, to the right, and, in the middle, Stockwell Street. The Spread Eagle restaurant is illuminated in the middle of the photo, with E.M. Sabo, the newsagents, on the left, and the Rose and Crown pub on the right. In the distance, on the left, is St. Alfege Church, one of six London churches designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor (1661-1736). The cranes in the background on the right are part of a contentious building site, for a new campus library and teaching and research facilities for the University of Greenwich, on land that was previously occupied by an outdoor second-hand market that was a big part of Greenwich's attractions.

I took this photo of Queen's House, on Cranbourn Street, on the northern side of Leicester Square, in London's West End, on September 10, 2012.

As described in the "Survey of London: volumes 33 and 34: St Anne Soho," edited by F. H. W. Sheppard (1966), "The whole of the ground on the north side of Leicester Square, including Lisle Street, Leicester Street, Sidney Place (formerly Sidney Street) and Leicester Place, was originally occupied by Leicester House and its gardens." The development of the western part of this area took place in the 1680's, while the area where Queens House now stands began later, following its purchase in 1789. The house "bears the date 1897, and was designed by Messrs. Saville and Martin. It was originally known as the Queen's Hotel, and opened in 1899," when "the ground floor contained a buffet and the grand dining-hall, the latter richly decorated with marble pilasters, paintings on walls and ceiling, and an onyx balustrade to the musicians' gallery. Downstairs was the grill-room, and on the first floor, besides a suite of masonic rooms, were drawing-, reading- and coffee-rooms, decorated in the Louis XV, Empire and Louis XVI styles respectively. The upper floors contained nearly a hundred bedrooms and private sitting-rooms."

In 1936, the upper floors were converted into offices, and remained so until the building reopened as a hotel in May 2012. The Premier Inn Leicester Square was the result of a £6 million pound renovation project that began in October 2010, when a deal was agreed with the owners, Soho Estates, who had bought it for £12 million in 1995.

On the ground floor, where Grill on the Square now operates, the Monseigneur News Theatre (a newsreel cinema) opened in 1936, which later became the Jacey News Theatre.
