70812 is seen crossing the S&C at Hellifield, she is taking the freight only line to Daisyfield Junction at Blackburn working the 6J37 1252 Carlisle to Chirk log train.
I was in the area for a week photographing the comings and goings on the S&C, the Rylestone branch , Arnside and Newcastle meeting up with some 1Z10 chums.
These aged logs are a feature in my local park and on this crisp frosty morning gave the perfect opportunity to define the interesting lines created over the years.
With the sun setting fast and Whernside already in shadow, it was in the last moments of sunlight that the loco appeared from Blea Moor. The Sun does its magic over Ribblehead beautifully illuminating the viaduct and train before ’logging off’ for the day.
We had waited here for well over an hour without the knowledge that this train was even running, fortunately, we held our nerve.

Found this log house that the family has moved out of. Looks like the siding has partially rotted off. Love that sawmill scraps chinking on the addition.

We had lunch here, in a second-growth forest. There are not so many primeval (old-growth) forests in the Smokies, which were mostly logged over before becoming a national park.
Right after lunch we reached the Albright Grove, one of those primeval forests. You can see the difference.
The Albright Grove is a reasonable day hike, but not for everyone. One old-growth forest is easy to reach, just beyond a popular site.
I'm coming over
See me down at the station by the lane
I better go it alone
56090 charges through Lancaster Castle on the up fast with 6J37, the 14.02 Carlisle - Chirk logs on Fri 16th August 2024.
With the failure of 56051, someone took the brave decision to allow 090 to run solo with load 17. No mean feat. That possibly contributed to the decision for another late pathing switch from the S&C to the WCML.
With the sun popping out in the nick of time and the London - Glasgow Pendo' coming into the platform immediately behind me, I consider myself lucky to have got this.

A redbelly turtle and a Florida soft-shelled turtle taking a sunbath on a log. Within seconds the soft-shelled turtle disappeared into the water.
The Florida redbelly turtle is mainly herbivorous, and can be found in nearly any type of aquatic habitat. It reaches particularly high densities in spring runs, and occasionally can be found in brackish water. This species is active year-round and spends a large portion of the day basking on logs. They are noted for sometimes laying their eggs in the nest mounds of alligators. The Florida redbelly is closely related to the Peninsula cooter (Pseudemys floridana) and can often be found basking on logs together.
The Florida softshell turtle (Apalone ferox) is a species of softshell turtle native to the Southeastern United States.
The Florida softshell turtle is found primarily in the state of Florida, but it also ranges to southern sections of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Texas. It is the only species of softshell turtle whose range spans the entire Florida peninsula.
A mixed train of ABe 4/4 III's and three loaded log wagons negotiate the S curves below Lago Bianco as it continues its climb towards the summit of the RhB at Ospizio Bernina. The logs are bound for the small lumber yard in Tirano, Italy.

After 4 days of continuous rain and cloud and fog it's time for a break... someone, please bring me sunshine... I'll be in the north of Scotland so if you could send it up there it would be great, thank you....
70817 snakes past Turton Tower between Entwistle & Bromley Cross with a diverted Colas log train 6Z38 1210 Carlisle Yard to Chirk on 5th April 2021.
The replacement of a bridge at Warrington Bank Quay resulted in the WCML being shut for four days over the Easter period.
As a result, the pathing of a freight service over the line via Darwen was always going to be of interest seeing as the route seldom gets anything other than Northern units - and the sight of the 1452ft long load with 20 loaded IWA wagons with 1288 tonnes trailing certainly stood out.
The train had run empty northbound over the same line the previous day.
There are very few places along the single line stretches of this route that a reasonable shot can be taken. The impressive 1847 built Turton Tower is one of them as proved by the 10 or so photographers assembled!
