DESCRIPTION
The project is an interactive installation that consists of 12 different species of electric fish from the Amazon River, such as the Black Ghost Knife, each in its own tank. Together these fish form a choir.
The fish continually discharge a weak electric field of constant frequency. Similar to sonar used by bats and dolphins, they use this field to detect their surroundings and prey while hunting at night. Each fish’s electrical field is picked up by a sensor, then amplified as a tone. Because each fish is different, their fields do not sound alike; together they provide the basic tones for a stirring audiovisual setting. Participants stand in front of the arc of fish tanks and act as a conductor.
Scale is a collaboration between scientist Malcolm MacIver, visual/conceptual artist Marlena Novak and composer/sound designer Jay Alan Yim, who together form localStyle.
