Tip to the travelers - if possible, get your breakfast before you board the train. It's not that the breakfast you get at the Carl Sandburg is bad or anything - it's just way overpriced. No reason to spend your money any more than you have to.

The only seats the cafe has. Not sure who all that stuff belonged to. Even if the seats were free, I don't imagine eating there would be too comfortable. The riders are probably expected to take their purchases to their seats and eat them there.

Like South Shore Line train cars, Carl Sandburg's train cars were designed to work on both raised and ground-level platforms. When the train stops at a ground-level platform, the conductor raises the trap door (which is usually in the "down" position. For the most part, Midwestern Amtrak stations have ground-level platforms, which makes me wonder why the conductors don;t just leave it up.
