Mme Kotiné Traoré produces a diversity of vegetable seeds, including okra, tomato, ground nut, cowpeas, onions, and African eggplant – all in a relatively small garden. Local vegetable seed production is of growing importance to the local economy as these seeds are much better adapted to local growing conditions and more resistant to local diseases than those imported and purchased from outside. Kotiné is also an innovator, experimenting with new ways to propagate her onion varieties – which you can see in the photo.

The Signwriter told me he was local born and bred. His parents lived in this street all their lives until they retired and went to live in Loughton. It wasn't long before they came back to live in Newington Green. The Signwriter had also moved away. He said that for his generation it was the thing to do. He went to live in Chingford. He too came back before too long. He told me: "My Mum's an urban girl. We're urban people."
The Signwriter's working patch extends down the Essex Road as far as Angel. He has the sort of local knowledge that's not on the world wide web.
