When it comes to working the sea around Tomahawk (or in fact the entire northeastern coastline) sailors need to be very careful. Those rocks on the left would rip a little boat like this apart in minutes. This is where local knowledge comes in so handy. It's not just a matter of knowing where all the rocks and reefs are (depth finders and GPS will give you that information), but understanding the currents.

This fishing trawler is working the area between Tomahawk Point and Tomahawk Island (which we'll see shortly). It would be so easy to be swept onto the rocks.

This photo has a few interesting features. The water appears layered with various shades of green, aqua and blue. That darker line on which the trawler appears to be sitting is a cloud shadow I could not more perfectly have placed. I am of course shooting into the sunlight here.

Fortunately the commercial fishermen know their way around the lake so well that they don't have to slow down in even the thickest fog. I guess knowing where the other fishermen will be is a big help as well.

This farmer in Machaze district decided to leave the Sansevieria plants in her field instead of removing them. Rhizomes and leaves are used to prevent and treat several chicken diseases. Note the extremely tall inflorescences (in fruit phase), unlike the much smaller ones of S. hyacinthoides. Local name: "Tchikwenga"

Ladies and gents, chicos y chicas, prepare yourselves for a true blast of the bizarre at ‘La Tomatina’ festival. The aim is to throw as many tomatoes as humanly possible, while dodging some of the 150,000-odd that propel across the streets of Buñol, Spain. This infographic will provide you with all the fruity goodness that comes with it – and yes, tomatoes are a fruit! Let’s get picking.

A lot of piloting is local knowledge. We don't just use the official buoys and don't always run down the middle of the channel. There are a lot of local landmarks that get used in ways not related to their original purpose. In this case the inbound ship has passed just above the Jesse Jones Bridge (BW8) and steadied up on the reach to Green's Bayou. There's a prominent red light on that course that the old guys showed me when I was an apprentice. That's what most everyone still steers by, 24 years later. See the comments for a different view of the red light.

Me at the top of James Bond falls. A hidden waterfall a quarter mile from a major highway in Honolulu, reached by hiking thru a 100 yard irrigation tunnel. No, I'm not telling you how to get there.

A friendly tour guide in Da Nang, waiting to assist travelers with insights into the history and culture of the region.

In the village of Safo, Bakoro Diarra (left) and his brother produce vegetables like papaya, tomato, eggplant, and onion, year round. Their good sized plot feeds family and provides surplus for market. Their profits buy grain. Unlike many young people, they have not abandoned the family farm for a tenuous life in the city. Even with their market success, their knowledge of local vegetable varieties and seed diversity must expand so they can build diversity and diminish the risk of potential disease.
