The Factory Arts District in Las Vegas, Nevada has been reclaimed by us. The area used to be blighted and ugly; artists and entrepreneurs put this area back on the map. This area is home to our First Fridays gathering each month; there is food, music, art, and lots of people whom gather for a night of fun.

Fully clothed, Lucky Dan and Naked Mike made their way into Songwriters Showcase and the KDHX Community Media Magnolia Avenue Studios with a mixed-up but never confused take on classic rock, folk and pop.

Why is Mike naked and why is Dan lucky? Well, Mike Newman spent years with the band Fairchild, so it's no surprise that he would feel a little naked on stage performing with just an acoustic guitar. And Dan Randant is fortunate to have found such a complimentary partner. Their mix of harmonica, vocals and guitars gives them a twangy, bluesy sound, nicely illustrated on their 2008 release This Time.

The July Artist of the Month is Jean Hurley of Wonalancet.

Some of her many friends drew from their collections of her artwork to make a surprise exhibition. We are pleased and proud to celebrate Jean with this small selection of her extraordinary oeuvre.

There are paintings, prints, handmade books, calendars, baskets, cards, all beautifully conceived and realized by Jean’s nimble hands. The earliest of these pieces date back to the 1970s.

We, who contributed our treasures to make this show, salute Jean,

Eamon O’Dohery is well known in Ireland having more than 40 large public sculptures worldwide with 30 of them located throughout Ireland. To the best of my knowledge there are six pieces in Dublin including the Golden Tree at Central Bank Plaza, James Connolly Memorial at Butt bridge and the famous ‘Floozy in the Jacuzzi’.

When I saw this 1988 sculpture in 2009 it was in very poor condition and because of rust and age the parts that should move in the wind did not move at all. Since then I have paid little attention to it but today while in the area I noticed that it looked fresh and new.

I had not known that Anne McGill [a local artist] had organised to have the installation restored.

Voyager Art & Tile is made up of two artists, Brian McArthur and Dawn Detarando. They have been working together as a team for over 10 years and together have over 35 years of art making experience.

"We are inspired by our natural surroundings and produce work that is responsive and whimsical, combining interests of flora, fauna and history that is related to the rural and urban environments we experience", they explain.

I am a huge fan of everything Gina creates! But this!! This piece has so much and means so much! Congrats to Gina!!

Irene Klar was born in Montreal and moved to Edmonton in 1973. People, their textiles and pattern decoration serve as her inspiration. Her interest in universal design elements has taken her on far-reaching travels. Her experiences are reflected in her art.
