A view of Gyantse, and its rice fields, atop the fort. Gyantse figures importantly in Anglo-Tibetan history. General Younghusband, who commandeered an English invasion of Tibet in 1904, spent a month in this fort on his way to Lhasa. An exhibit inside the fort details some of the war methods he used when conquering the city. Tibet ultimately fell to the English, who occupied it until 1906, when they signed a treaty placing Tibet within China's sphere of political influence. Some commentators argue that this treaty later gave the West a political reason for refusing aid to Tibet during the Chinese "liberation." Harrer adds that Tibet never declared itself independent when China would announce sovereignty, making international aid less likely. Also, the US had its international concerns focused on Korea and the growing threat from the post-War Soviet Union.
