Despite being a desert and a volcanic landscape, Lobos Island has a large number of natural habitats. There are over 130 plant species, including the siempreviva - endemic island-, the Sea Uvilla, or White Caleton which is very attractive because of its shape and color.
Because of its great ecological diversity the site has been designated as a protected zone, the Parque Natural del Islote de Lobos.
After I returned from my vacation, one of the VPs in my department asked what wildlife I had seen in the Galapagos. I rattled off the sea lions, penguins, turtles, tortoises, blue footed boobies, masked boobies...and when I got to those the two last birds, he just stared at me. I reassured him that it wasn't an HR moment - there are birds that are truly called boobies. The Spanish originally called them "bobo" as they looked silly and stupid, and then the English morphed that into "booby."
Here is a blue-footed booby pair. Even though they have an egg, they are still doing their courtship dance, which consists of carefully raising up their feet, placing them down and doing a wing/tail display.
Species that are well adapted to high salinity dominate the island.
There's over 130 species of vegetation some of which are unique to the island

Rare dramatic aerial panoramic image of the sunrise over Lobos island near Corralejo in Fuerteventura
Lobos Island, close to Corralejo on Fuerteventura. It gets its name from when it was home to dense populations of seals or "lobos del mar" (Sea Wolves) but the Spanish invaders killed the lot off long ago.
In 1994 it was designated the Parque Natural Islote de Lobos and is now a protected area.

We met this young Italian woman on the boat between Fuerteventura and Isla de Lobos, and we spent more time with her when she showed up on our excursion to Lanzarote, two days later...
What was her name? Oops... :-o
Excursión altamente recomendada. La tripulación es majísima, a 4 kms de la costa de Fuerteventura, paran y te puedes bañar o jugar con una banana de 8 personas.
Al llegar a Corralejo ( Fuerteventura) te llevan a unas enormes dunas para más tarde comer en un restaurante, dejarte unas horas en una playa de aguas cristalinas, junto a la isla de Lobos.
Luego te vuelves a subir al barco y de vuelta a Lanzarote. A la vuelta, más tranquila se pueden ver peces voladores y bajar a la quilla del barco para ver la fauna marina.
