Mertola, Beja, Portugal.
A few kilometres north of Mértola, the Guadiana river strengthens and digs a craggy throat of twenty meters high, rushing over the “Pego do Savel”. The origin of the name "Pulo do Lobo" (wolf’s leap) came from the short gap between the two banks of the river. Says the legend it allowed wolves make the crossing when they still were sighted in the region. However, after descending to the valley, the myth becomes pretty obvious: the margins are really close but not enough to allow any mammal transpose the abyss without bursting into the turbulent waters between the weird and winding shale formations.

Poucos quilómetros a norte de Mértola, o Rio Guadiana ganha vigor e escava no seu leito primitivo uma garganta escarpada de vinte metros de altura, precipitando-se sobre o Pego do Savel. A origem do nome “Pulo do Lobo” terá a ver com a curta distância existente neste local entre as duas margens do rio. Diz a lenda que permitia aos lobos ali fazer a sua travessia quando ainda eram avistados na região. Contudo, descendo ao vale, logo se desmistifica a questão: as margens estão próximas mas não tanto que permitam qualquer mamífero transpor em segurança o abismo sem se precipitar nas águas que correm turbulentas num mar de espuma, pelo meio de estranhas e sinuosas formações de xisto.

The tree was on the North Shore path at Point Lobos State Reserve in Carmel, California. The tree was located along Bluefish Cove near Guillemot Island.

O lobo-guará ou guará (Chrysocyon brachyurus) é o maior canídeo nativo da América do Sul. A sua distribuição geográfica estende-se pelo sul do Brasil, Paraguai, Peru e Bolívia a leste dos Andes, estando extinto no Uruguai e talvez na Argentina, e é considerado como uma espécie ameaçada.
Embora não se enquadre na categoria crítica da IUCN, corre alto risco de extinção na natureza a médio prazo, em função do declínio populacional e da extrema fragmentação da área de ocupação. O tamanho populacional está se reduzindo, com probabilidade de extinção na natureza em 100 anos. As principais ameaças ao lobo-guará vêm da conversão de terras para agricultura, do fato de ser suscetível a doenças de cães domésticos, que competem com eles por alimento, e de acidentes como atropelamentos em estradas
