THE ART PROJECT for the San Rafael Residence Hall began from a request to ‘cheer up’ the lobby and elevator area. San Rafael is one of the older residence halls at UCSB and the hallways are filled with cloth covered walls and heavy wood paneling. Our graphic artist and webmaster, Eric Zobel, worked with livein lead staff, Resident Assistants, and Front Desk staff to elicit suggestions for potential design ideas. After some back and forth the overall consensus was to incorporate the hall mascot* (a wolf) with the residence hall color* (purple) into the overall piece.
Eric took it from there and decided on a fresh and modern look with 2D-like graphics of the buildings (tower and adjacent clusters), as well as incorporating our oceanside setting and a “Welcome”. The design is one cohesive piece but occupies two separate wall sections (see above and below) in a narrow hallway near the first floor elevators. A wolf appears in the moon on the left and below the “Welcome.” It was meant to be simple and colorful, and to fit nicely in the long narrow space where it will welcome new and returning students to the building. Overall the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
*In 2015 as part of our Strategic Plan, the “Focus on the Whole Person” team had the outcome: “Our programs and services foster opportunities for residents to create a healthy sense of community.” They worked on identifying, cultivating and establishing traditions. Two ideas implemented were the establishment of a mascot and building color, chosen by student residents, for each of our residence halls.

Here we must bow because we are entering one of the inner gates of Nan Puoto Temple.
The passage through this doorway is always a stunning transformation to me. Absolutley everything changes and I enter a different world.
After Lucycat's question below, I just added some notes identifying the buildings. There are about 300 monks and monk teachers who livein this compound. My friend, DaXing lives like most of the monks do, in a small single room in a long two storey building. His is upstairs in the building whose door we are looking through here.

I have known Pat since I was a little girl. She is now my trainer. Just sitting around and talking can be such a learning experience. The knowledge she has about horses and training just oozes out of her. I have been blessed to have her train me and for just being able to go to her place and hang out and learn! My daughter Bailey took this photo on Sat. while I was on Dreamer teaching her yearling to pony. Below is a link to view her stallion and some more info on who she is!

This is a link to a site for her Quarter horse stud, Smart Equalizer.
I had the pleasure of driving him back from Ocala to her farm.

Deuterium, or heavy water, used to regulate the fuel & spent fuel rods in the atomic pile-nuclear reactor-dirty bomb-ground zero-crime scene of FUKUSHIMA'S CORPORATE DESTRUCTION has been seeping into the FRESH GROUNDWATER OF EASTERN JAPAN. Thus, radioactive, poisonous groundwater renders fresh drinking water lethal & water for laundry/washing objects&showering, even more DEADLY!!! ALL THE MORE REASON TO EVACUATE THIS ZONE IMMEDIATELY!!! Uranium isotopes, prepared in the form of a gas, & allowed to pass through porous barriers helped create U-235/& U-238. However, the gaseous uranium compound is URANIUM HEXAFLORIDE, AN EXTREMELY CORROSIVE GAS, which will eat its way through any ordinary glass bottle!
