My backyard border takes on a whole new look in autumn when most of the perennial flowers have passed their prime and my collection of ornamental grasses take over.
Starting from the left:
'Moudry' Pennisetum alopecuroides (those amazing black flowers!)
'Little Zebra' Miscanthus sinensis (a dwarf cultivar of 'Strictus' with gold horizontal bands across the blade of grass)
'Yaku Jima' Miscanthus sinensis (in back - you can just seed the silver panicles)
Helictotrichon sempervirens (the silver blue clump in the front, common name is Blue Oat Grass)
'Moundry Pennisetum alopecuroides
'Dixieland' Miscanthus sinensis (a dwarf cultivar of 'Variegata' with narrower blades of grass and a shorter stature)
The russet red flowers are 'Autumn Joy' Sedum (Hylotelephium) and the amazing burgundy foliage is how a PJM Rhododendron looks when the temperatures turn colder. The glimpse of gold foliage in the far right is 'Crippsii' Chamaecyparis obtusa and it is surrounded by 'Crimson Pygmy' Berberis thunbergii.

Leaf blades feature, at irregular intervals, distinctive horizontal yellow bands (to 1” in height) that retain good coloration throughout the growing season. Flowers appear in corymbose panicles of 10-13 racemes (each to 6” long) above the foliage in late summer. Tiny flowers emerge gray-purple with the plumes having an overall wine-purple coloration. As seeds begin to form, the flower/seed plumes fade to creamy tan, often providing some winter interest. Foliage fades to tan after frost. U.S. Plant Patent PP13,008 issued September 24, 2002.
