A moody day in a rainy and snowy day at The largest Tibetan Monastery in front of Lamuyangcuo Lake, The Ganden Sumtsenling Monastery at 3,380 m., Shangri-La City, Yunnan, China.

 

The monastery is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan province and is sometimes referred to as the Little Potala Palace.

The Gyeltang Sungtseling Monastery is sometimes referred to as the Little Potala Palace; it was built in 1679.

The Gyeltang Sungtseling Gonpa was extensively damaged in the Cultural Revolution and subsequently rebuilt in 1983 by Tibetans and are stil working on it; at its peak the monastery contained accommodation for 2000 monks; it currently accommodates 700 monks in 200 associated houses.

 

The monastery contains 3 temples and features an 8 metre tall statue of Buddha.

Dancing in the town square. Each night there is dancing in the town square - to the sounds of local folk songs. Everybody joins in - old ladies, young women and girls, men and boys of all ages. As well many tourists join in.

Prayer flags or lung ta on the pathway leading to the monastery. They are in the order blue, whit, red, green, yellow. Blue symbolizes sky/space, white symbolizes air/wind, red symbolizes fire, green symbolizes water, and yellow symbolizes earth. the Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras will be blown by the wind to spread the good will and compassion into all pervading space. Therefore, prayer flags are thought to bring benefit to all.

A Qing Dynasty era Buddhist temple complex built between 1767 and 1771, during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor (1735-1796). The temple was modeled after the Potala Palace of Tibet, the old sanctuary of the Dalai Lama built a century earlier
