The Lippe is a river in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is a right tributary of the Rhine and 220.3 km in length with an elevation difference of 125 metres and a catchment area of 4.890 km². The source is located at the edge of the Teutoburg Forest in Bad Lippspringe close to the city of Paderborn. It runs westward through Paderborn, Lippstadt and then along the northern edge of the Ruhr area, parallel to the river Emscher and river Ruhr. The river finally enters the Rhine at Wesel.
The river Lippe has been used as an infrastructure in Roman times. For the Romans the river was a gateway to Germania, running from the river Rhine to the region around Paderborn. The watercourse was used for transport of supplies, so along the banks of the Lippe many former Roman camps can be found. In the last 200 years many of these camps have been identified, above all the camp in Haltern which is likely to be the former headquarter of the imperial prince Tiberius. The distance between the camps is about a one-day walk of the troops, which is almost 30 km. Today’s identified Roman camps are: Olfen, Xanten, Haltern, Oberaden, Holsterhausen, Anreppen and Beckinghausen.
The Externsteine near Horn in Lippe are a natural monument in Northwest Germany with a touch of magic.
Looks like spring has finally arrived and we used Sunday for a tour to the Externsteine, a rock formation near Horn in Lippe, Germany. Despite regular visits this place still excites me and many others. More information about the place here
We noticed the truth in these words when we finally made it to the peak of the Köterberg, the highest mountain of East-Westphalia. We were a little bit disappointed as we saw signs of human activities giving proof that we were not the first to conquer this mountain. This summit cross on the peak created the same feelings Robert Falcon Scott had to experience when he arrived at the South pole. Different to him we survived the way back. Köterberg, Lippe, Germany

Back to business, back to (my) reality. Look over the Schiedersee from the dam in severe weather with the perfect storm approaching. Schieder-Schwalenberg, Lippe, Germany
Christmas food was great, so it was necessary to get out for some kind of exercise. We made the choice to hike up the highest mountain of East-Westphalia, the Köterberg.
With a hight of almost 500 Meters I can only impress my Dutch and Danish friends, but the climb is a real challenge. This time we did it without oxygen masks and sherpas. On the peak we had a tremendous view over the area, strong winds and even a little bit of sunshine. Köterberg, Lippe, Germany
This weekend started with a full-size storm, we used Saturday afternoon for a trip around the Schiedersee, an artificial lake in the Lippe area. The weather was extremely dull and nature did not really offer the typical Autumn colours. Finally I found these fun boats to add some colours to the scenery. Schieder-Schwalenberge, Lippe, Germany
