Live For Today, by The Grass Roots

When I think of all the worries people seem to find

Lucky enough to be tagged by the ever lovely Cat, I figured I'd better post my four likes and four dislikes before I get hit by an effin' bus. :P The idea for including the song came from keldemean, who had given Cat a link to the video.

This photo is of a building on the other side of Fairfax County Parkway from where I work in Reston, Virginia. (Zoom in on that map by two clicks and you'll see where I'm talking about... I work near the south side of 267 and the west side of 7100/Fairfax County Parkway.) I often see sunsets reflected in the mirrored windows of this building (which is on the east side of 7100) since I work the evening shift. Seeing the sunset reflected in this building today, I quickly returned to my desk to grab my little PowerShot A590 before the light faded. It seemed such a beautiful end to a gorgeous day and so damned apropos to the layoff that will be happening in a little more than a week: I'm wanting to view this as the sunset of a nearly 30-year career in telecom.

We recently received news of how our final days here will come to an end. I mentioned a couple of months ago that I would be getting laid off, and this is how it will happen: Today and tomorrow are my weekend. I will work as scheduled this coming Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (Memorial Day). Memorial Day is a paid holiday, so I'll get paid holiday pay, as well as overtime. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, no one in my department will be required to come into work, because all of the computers will have been removed from the building.

Finally, on Friday, May 29, everyone will be required to come in at 10a, regardless of the shift they're normally scheduled to work, and we will turn in our badges, our parking passes, company credit cards, etc. Everyone will be paid as if we've worked our normal shift for the whole week, including any shift differential (in my case, an extra 10% because I work evenings).

I will receive three months pay for my severance package, plus I should be eligible for 9 months of unemployment compensation, since I worked in Virginia. Even though I live in Maryland, my unemployment is based on the State in which I work, not on the State in which I have residence.

I've been unhappy with my employer for quite sometime now, but due to certain financial obligations I've been reluctant to leave. Now, however, I am experiencing a huge, HUGE, HUGE measure of relief that this job is FINALLY coming to an end. I will be EXTREMELY happy when this job is over for good.

My co-workers and I now stand where two roads have diverged in the career wood. and while they plan their future careers in telecom, I— I plan to take the road less traveled by, and I'm confident that it'll make all the difference.

My plans are to make writing fiction my primary endeavor, and photography my secondary. (I will look for work, too, of course. I'm not entirely stupid. :P) Eight years ago, a month after 9/11 happened, I had the opportunity to give my writing this sort of priority, and I was criticized for taking advantage of it. I wrote a novel, one of three that I've written thus far, but nothing came of it. I intend to start on another, and to give it the sort of attention that a novel deserves.

Before that happens, however, I will be going to Portugal for a three-week vacation.
