I don't know why this squirrel was so camera shy, but it's running away made for a great shot! LOL

Sacred Kingfisher

Scientific Name: Todiramphus sanctus

Description: The Sacred Kingfisher is a medium sized kingfisher. It has a turquoise back, turquoise blue rump and tail, buff-white underparts and a broad cream collar. There is a broad black eye stripe extending from bill to nape of neck. Both sexes are similar, although the female is generally lighter with duller upper parts. Young birds are similar to the female, but have varying amounts of rusty-brown edging to feathers on the collar and underparts, and buff edges on the wing coverts.

Distribution: The Sacred Kingfisher is common and familiar throughout the coastal regions of mainland Australia and less common throughout Tasmania. The species is also found on islands from Australasia to Indonesia and New Zealand.

Habitat: The Sacred Kingfisher inhabits woodlands, mangroves and paperbark forests, tall open eucalypt forest and melaleuca forest.

Seasonal movements: In Australia, Sacred Kingfishers spend the winter in the north of their range and return south in the spring to breed.

Feeding: Sacred Kingfishers forage mainly on the land, only occasionally capturing prey in the water. They feed on crustaceans, reptiles, insects and their larvae and, infrequently, fish. The birds perch on low exposed branch on the lookout for prey. Once prey is located, the Sacred Kingfisher swoops down and grasps it in its bill, returning to the perch to eat it.

Breeding: For most of the year Sacred Kingfishers are mainly solitary, pairing only for the breeding season. Usually two clutches are laid in a season. Both sexes excavate the nest, which is normally a burrow in a termite mound, hollow branch or river bank. The nest chamber is unlined and can be up to 20m above the ground. Both sexes also incubate the eggs and care for the young.

Calls: The voice of the Sacred Kingfisher is a loud "ek ek ek ek" repeated continuously throughout breeding season. Birds also give a "kee kee kee" in excitement and a series of chirring, scolding notes when alarmed.

Minimum Size: 19cm

Maximum Size: 24cm

Average size: 21cm

Average weight: 45g

Breeding season: September to December; occasionally extended to March, if conditions are favourable.

Clutch Size: 3 to 6

Incubation: 18 days

Nestling Period: 26 days

MACRO MONDAYS....'The blues' theme

This popular pale blue, 'Wedgwood Blue', is named after the mineral jasper.

Josiah Wedgwood was Charles Darwin's grandfather, and was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England during the 1700's, remembered today as the “Father of English Potters”

Macro Monday's and the theme of "Radiant".

For this weeks theme I had thought about using the bulb of my Maglite Torch but I remembered I had used that some months ago.

Another idea I had wasn't working too well so I decided to use this lighter that was left outside our flat a couple of months ago by some workmen who had come to replace our front door.

This is the last of the six species of Mantis that I photographed at the Liberty Centre in Ringwood. Again a single handheld shot with flash but not sharp throughout. It has similarities to the Ghost Mantis but is a lot lighter and larger.

Thought I would balance up all those shots of the flashy male. The female has very similar markings, just lighter and lacks the chestnut coloured cap.

For anyone interested, have put a link below in comments to a previous comparison I did between male and female.

Shots taken with me hidden away at the side of a Hornbeam Avenue in a small canvas hide crouching as low as I could to get a decent POV. Not the most comfortable place to spend 4 hours at a time hoping something would show up.

A 2nd shot of 66734 this time she is seen arriving at Hindlow Quarry. Hindlow Quarry is on Stearndale Moor which is pretty much the highest railway point in the area. The further east i ventured the snow became lighter. Even just a few miles away at Topley Pike the snow covering was much more patchy.

The tracks leaving the center of the right hand side of the frame lead to Dowlow Quarry just a few hundred yards further along the tracks.

66734 was working the 4H89 0510 Hams Hall to Hindlow.

All the Monarchs have gone. There are few flowers for them to feed on, now, and the night-time frosts are progressively more deep and numbing.

But the shorter days and chilly nights which cued the Monarchs to head south also remind the Milkweed seeds that it's time to burst from their pods and take off on their own adventures.

Lighter than light, they'll ride and tumble on the breezes, traveling far shorter distances than the Monarchs. But their journeys are just as important - once landed and anchored to a hopeful spot of soil, they'll go on to create new homes for the Monarchs to return to in the many coming Springs.

Panasonic Leica 100-400 versus 50-200. Maybe I don't really NEED it, but it's lighter and easier to handle than the 100-400.

Lighter, having a considerable amount of light in the dark.

An old lighter that was found in my father's house.

The Independence, a yacht that tried to make it to the

America´s cup race in 1901. My colorization of a 1901 Detroit Publishing Co. photo in the Library of Congress archive.

"The Independence, an entrant for the 1901 America's Cup race. It was considered the fastest boat in the 1901 America's Cup, but turned out to be too fragile and was never in the race. The Cup was eventually won by the Columbia, one of only three boats to successfully defend the Cup."(Wikipedia)

In the book "Thomas Lipton´s America´s Cup Campaigns" by Richard V. Simpson, the Independence is described in this way:

"Although her hull is probably not lighter that that of the Columbia, she gains power through the flattening of the floor and hardening of the bilges, and the carrying of the floor out into overhangs of exceptional length. As originally designed, she was to carry a sail-spread of 14,611 square feet, with a total ballast of 75 tons. The unprecedented character of her model -.unprecedented, that is, for a 90-footer - rendered her tentative method of proportioning the spars almost anecessity: and, very wisely, care was taken to have the sail-spread over rather than under the capacity of the boat."
